“Let’s hurry, Dorothy. Let’s go,” Raylee said as his tears fell onto Dorothy’s face.
Dorothy continued speaking, “You revealed the truth because of me, didn’t you? You realized it, right...
“A few days ago, my physical condition started to worsen. I knew it was because the remnants of my soul were about to dissipate. Mr. Tipton is almost done merging with my soul, so you planned to speak up, didn’t you?
“Thank you, Ray. I feel so useless. I’ve never been brave enough to face the truth.”
Raylee held Dorothy tightly. “Don’t say that. Don’t speak anymore...”
“In fact, when I found out that the token was ineffective, I had already planned to die.”
Dorothy slowly raised her hand, gathering all her strength to remove her veil.
“Thank you, Ray, for letting me take one last good look at you.”
Raylee was unable to hold back his tears any longer, and they slid down his face onto Dorothy’s hand.
“Ray, you’re really handsome. I’m sure many people like you.”
Raylee did not respond as he was crying too hard to speak.
“Ray, I haven’t dared to look in the mirror for over a decade. Am I very ugly?”
“No...” Raylee’s voice trembled, but he still forced himself to say, “Y-You’re beautiful.”
Tears shimmered in Dorothy’s eyes, yet she still managed to smile.
“Liar...”
“No, really. You’re beautiful.”
“Thank you, Ray. Thank you for helping me find the meaning of life. Only when I chat and bicker with you do I feel my existence.”
Dorothy’s tears streamed down her face as she turned her head to look at Raylee more easily.
Reality and memories intertwined.
Every time after they bickered, Dorothy would go and stand in front of Raylee. In those moments, Raylee would reach out and gently pat Dorothy’s head. It had always been their little secret gesture.
They had quarreled countless times from when they were kids, yet neither had ever lashed out at the other or given each other the silent treatment after a fight. Instead, they always ended their arguments with this gesture.
After patting Dorothy on the head, Raylee would follow up with the familiar phrase, “I'm just a fool who's always making you angry. Don't mind me."
Dorothy would always listen to those words that had become so familiar and dear to her heart.
She had no regrets.
Yet, there was still a hint of unwillingness deep inside her. She had not been able to express her true feelings to Raylee. She longed, so desperately, to wear a wedding dress and become Raylee’s bride, but she dared not say it aloud.
She was on the brink of death, so how could she bring herself to hold him back?
This was enough, and Dorothy felt content.
