As a golden light appeared, Smiley ascended to become one of the gods. Although her power was still far from that of a typical deity, her rapid growth promised that she would become stronger with time.
Dusky ultimately decided to erase her memories of the human world. It was not out of malice but to keep her from being burdened by too many lingering thoughts. He knew that holding onto human emotions could prevent her from becoming a true god.
Dusky then clapped his hands lightly and said, "Barrier, release."
The dark clouds that had been hovering over Grenford vanished. Sunlight bathed the city, and while nothing seemed to have changed, everything felt different. The once-dominant four great families of Grenford were no more.
Dusky intervened in the end by altering the memories of the people. He knew this action defied the natural order, but even so, he was determined to go through with it.
Time passed, and now, Grenford was enjoying a rare sunny day.
Chuck lay lazily in bed, unwilling to get up. The warm weather made him drowsy.
Suddenly, Clayton yanked the covers off him.
"It's already late! Get up and go to school!"
Chuck rubbed his sleepy eyes and glanced at his phone. "Come on, Clay. It's the weekend today."
"Huh? Is it? Uh... Hahaha." Clayton laughed awkwardly, scratching his head. The large house felt empty with just the two of them.
The brothers decided to head out together. Before leaving, they stopped by the portraits of their parents. Clayton promised them that he would always take good care of his little brother.
With that, the two brothers stepped outside, ready to face the world together.
"What do you want to eat?" Clayton asked.
Chuck thought for a moment before answering, "There's nothing fun in the upper levels. Let's go to the lower levels."
The two brothers took the direct elevator down to the lower levels, which was just as bustling and vibrant as the upper levels but with more recreational and entertainment facilities.
The two sat down, and Clayton pulled out his phone to check his pending wages. "That idiot boss still hasn't paid me," he grumbled.
Chuck was also on his phone, scrolling through his messages until he found the chat buried at the very bottom.
"Zoe, are you awake?" he typed and sent. He made sure Clayton would not see it, knowing his brother would definitely lose his temper if he found out.
To his surprise, Zoe replied instantly, and Clayton noticed Chuck's sudden excitement.
"What's making you so happy over there?"
"Oh, it's nothing. Just a text."
"You're always grinning at that phone of yours. Let me see!"
"No way! I need my privacy too, you know!"
