On the way to Myanmar, Charlotte seized the opportunity when the kidnappers weren’t paying attention, stole their confiscated phone, and sent a message asking for help.
It was this clue that led the police to capture the kidnappers and recover the ransom.
I was awarded a prize and received a large sum of money.
With my plane ticket in hand, I boarded the plane feeling despondent.
In the past, I yearned to study abroad, simply hoping to achieve success and return home to give my parents a better life.
But this time, I was doing it solely for myself.
That shabby, impoverished home had nothing worth missing.
And those wealthy parents who only pretended to be poor weren’t worth my attachment either.
The only person I was reluctant to leave behind was my boyfriend, James.
Before leaving for abroad, I called him to reassure him and told him that once I graduated and settled abroad, I would arrange for him to come and live with me.
After arriving overseas, due to my excellent grades before the recommendation, I quickly joined a research group and immersed myself in my project, undistracted.
Here, everyone was focused solely on their research, without any concern for the social status or wealth of the team members.
Here, I met many people, and my mentor praised me, making me feel welcomed and cared for in ways I had never experienced before.
I thought that by going abroad, I could sever all ties with my parents. But to my surprise, their connections were so extensive that they still managed to find me.
Just after leaving the research institute, several luxury cars appeared in front of me.
A group of bodyguards rushed out, escorting two figures toward me.
“My dear daughter! We’ve finally found you!”
I raised my eyes and saw them.
One was dressed in a suit, with polished shoes, and the other wore a qipao adorned with pearls and jewels.
The unhealthy pallor had long vanished from their faces. My father’s once-bent back was now upright, and my mother’s once-submissive expression was gone.
They were the proud, high-standing, and invincible couple of the wealthy elite.
But when I saw them, there was no warmth in my heart, only a deep sense of humiliation.
I pretended not to see them and turned to leave.
My father quickly instructed the bodyguards to block my path.
I glared at them, and the bodyguards immediately lowered their heads.
“Miss, I’m sorry, but the boss has given orders. We cannot let you leave.”
I recognized him immediately. He was one of the people who had hit me the hardest in front of the hotel.
I suddenly smiled.
In the rearview mirror, I saw my father furious, taking his anger out on the bodyguard.
“You bastard! You should have your eyes gouged out! How dare you hit my daughter! How dare you insult her!”
The bodyguard kept begging for mercy.
In the following days, my parents appeared every day, trying to meet me, even offering to sponsor the research institute to see me.
But once the research institute learned about my situation, they refused.
“Mr. Parker, we know you’re wealthy, but Parker Charlotte is the most promising researcher here. We cannot let such a talented individual feel disappointed just for the sake of your money.”
My father still tried to argue, but he was ruthlessly kicked out.
I grew tired of it all and decided to live at the research institute.
After a month, my parents realized I was determined and left in frustration.
They knew I wouldn’t forgive them, so they turned to James as a last resort.
But James, due to what my mother had done in the past, refused to help them no matter what.
Then, one day, a year later, my parents’ butler called to say that my father had a terminal illness and didn’t have much time left.
James, upon hearing this, urged me to return home to visit.
I agreed to go back, but not for them—only to celebrate James’s birthday.
