My Birthday, My Downfall novel Chapter 49

But at that moment, all I felt was rage and disappointment.

My own parents could do something like this.

Mia walked up to me, her gaze full of mockery.

“You ugly monster, even your parents despise you. Why don’t you go die?”

“I’m above you, just a little worm in the mud. Dare to gamble? If we both end up in trouble, who do you think Mom and Dad would care more about?”

I thought she was just talking, but the next moment, a group of men in black rushed in.

Mia was momentarily stunned.

“Who are you? Get out of here!”

One of the men slapped her.

“Miss Parker, I’m not your dog that you can order around!”

The men forced us both to wear hoods and shoved us into a van, instructing James to go back and deliver the message to my parents.

Once the hoods were removed, I saw Mia’s face pale with fear.

We were both tied to chairs, and as I looked around, I realized we were in an abandoned construction site.

The kidnappers, wearing masks, sneered.

“Mia, you love showing off your wealth so much. We’ve been watching you for a long time.”

One of them filmed us with a phone, then called my parents.

“Mr. Parker, Mrs. Parker, we have both your daughters. Be smart and transfer the ransom.”

“Don’t call the police, or we’ll kill them!”

After seeing the video, my parents stopped pretending and trembled as they spoke.

“Don’t hurt them! How much is the ransom? We’ll pay!”

Before the kidnappers could respond, Mia started crying loudly.

“Dad! Mom! Help me! I’m scared!”

I tried to shout, but my voice was drowned out by Mia’s cries.

The kidnapper mentioned a sum.

“Five million each. You have half an hour. If you don’t make it, you’ll only find two corpses!”

Hearing this, my parents were panicked, speaking incoherently.

“Don’t kill them, we... we’ll pay!”

“But we don’t have enough money right now. Can you give us more time? Five million for both of them, and we’ll let them go.”

The kidnapper sneered and glanced at both me and Mia.

“I’ve been keeping an eye on both your daughters. One is spoiled and extravagant, spends money like water, while the other looks like she hasn’t eaten in days, working two jobs just to get by. You really are biased, huh?”

“Here’s the deal. Five million. You can only choose one.”

Dad immediately looked troubled.

Soon after, I overheard Mom mumbling something.

“Dear, the company’s cash flow isn’t great. We can only scrape together five million at most. I think we should save one first, they won’t dare actually kill anyone.”

These words were spoken softly, but both Mia and I heard them.

“Charlotte, don’t be afraid. They won’t hurt you. Once they get the money, they’ll return you and your sister, and you’ll be safe at home.”

Mom also added a word.

“Your dad is right, darling, be brave. We’ll definitely save you.”

I heard their comforting words, but my heart bled.

In their hearts, Mia was the one that mattered most.

In this gamble, I ultimately lost to Mia.

My parents, fearing Mia’s life was in danger, unhesitatingly handed over the ransom, betting that the kidnappers wouldn’t dare kill me.

I choked back tears and responded.

“Dad, Mom, the debt of raising me is now repaid in this lifetime.”

Hearing this, my parents panicked completely.

“Darling! What are you saying? Nothing’s going to happen to you...”

Before he could finish, I signaled the kidnapper to take the phone away.

He glanced at me, a look of sympathy in his eyes.

Half an hour passed. The kidnapper confirmed the ransom was received and had Mia taken away, hooded, and pushed into the van. I was left behind.

Once my parents confirmed that Mia was safely on her way, they were about to ask the kidnappers if I would be released as well.

However, what they heard through the phone was a deafening gunshot...

The moment the gunshot rang out, both Mom and Dad trembled, standing there in shock for a long time, unable to process what had just happened.
