Chapter 9

Flashing ambulance lights cut through the night.
Wendy lay curled up on the stretcher, her pale face etched with fear.
Yves gripped Wendy’s hand so tightly that his knuckles turned white. Meanwhile, Bryant and Daphne stayed close. They were anxious and tense, constantly checking on Wendy to make sure she wasn’t in any pain or discomfort.
“Why aren’t we there yet? How much farther is the hospital?” Yves muttered, eyes flicking toward the endless string of red lights ahead. He grew impatient and urged them to drive faster.
Just then, Wendy violently coughed in his arms.
Yves immediately comforted her, saying, “Don’t worry, we’re almost there.” He leaned down, held her close, and gently patted her back.
Wendy looked at the three of them with teary eyes. “Yves… Mom, Dad… I seriously thought I’d never see you again. I was so scared…‘
After hearing that, Daphne’s heart twisted. She stroked Wendy’s shaking back and said, ‘
Maybe… It’s time for Yves and Zoey to get a divorce. You two belong together, and we are all in favor of this arrangement.”
Daphne then let out a heavy sigh. “Besides, I think Zoey must have come to her senses by now.

As soon as her words fell, Wendy violently shook her head. “No… Zoey would be heartbroken. Even though I like Yves, I don’t want Zoey to be sad.”
Yves felt a lump in his throat as he looked at Wendy. Even in her weakness, she was still considerate. It sent a dull ache through his chest.
“Mr. and Mrs. Silvain, I’ll talk to Zoey tomorrow,” he firmly said as he held Wendy’s hand. ” Wendy doesn’t deserve to suffer like this.”
Half an hour later, the ambulance screeched to a stop outside the emergency building, and an impatient Yves scooped Wendy into his arms and ran all the way inside.
After getting her into the emergency room for a checkup, he sank onto the bench. As mulled the situation over, he unlocked his phone and found Zoey’s number in his contacts list.
He hit the call button.

“Hello?” His voice was hoarse. As he stared at the closed operating room door, he dug his nails deep into his palm and said, “Let’s get a divorce.”
There was a long silence on the other end before a soft chuckle came through. “You’ve probably been wanting this for a while, haven’t you? Is this for Wendy? Is that what she wants?”
“That’s enough!” Yves snapped, crushing the paper cup in his hand. “Wendy’s been thinking of you this whole time. Can’t you at least see her as your younger sister? Why are you still doubting her when she’s in such poor condition?”
Just then, the emergency room doors swung open.
Immediately, Yves shot to his feet and dropped his phone.
Wendy was wheeled out on a hospital bed. She still looked pale, but when she saw him, she gave him a weak smile. “Have you talked to Zoey? I must’ve been too selfish, huh…”
“Don’t worry about any of that.” Yves held her hand. “Once you’re discharged, let’s get married, okay?”
Right then, his phone vibrated. It was a message from Zoey.
“I agree to the divorce.”
Yves stared at the words on the screen and felt a strange hollowness creeping into his chest.
