Chapter 23
“What else have you been hiding from me?” Yves demanded. His hand trembled as he held the phone.
He abruptly looked up. “You were the one who accused her of stealing during your birthday celebration, weren’t you? You were also responsible for her allergies and burns! How could you be so vicious, Wendy?”
The blood drained from Wendy’s face. Instinctively, she stepped back and knocked over the vase behind her.
It shattered loudly on the floor.
“I only did those things because I love you so much…” she sobbed. “She always acted like she was okay, like nothing ever bothered her! I just wanted you to see her for who she really-”
Yves couldn’t take it anymore. He raised his hand and slapped Wendy across the face.
As Wendy clutched her cheek, she stumbled backward and fell to the ground. Disbelief was written all over her face. “Did you just hit me because of her? Do you really expect me to believe you don’t care about her? You’re such a hypocrite, Yves Pearce!”
After listening to Wendy’s cries, a wave of disappointment washed over him. “Have you not seen how good I’ve been to you all these years? Even the Silvians treated you as if you were their own flesh and blood!
“You could’ve had a peaceful life, Wendy. I was awfully wrong about you…”
After calming down, Wendy looked up at Yves and snarled, “Yves, you don’t seriously think Zoey left because of me, do you?
“I’ll let you in on something–she came from a better family than I did, and I’ve always hated her for it! She had all the things I wanted, so I took away everything she cared about, including her parents and you!
“But women know each other best, Yves. She left you because of what you did. She’s completely given up on you!
“You’ve always gotten everything you wanted, haven’t you, Mr. Pearce? How does it feel to lose someone you love? It must hurt, huh?
“I honestly didn’t think you had a heart. You said you loved me, but now, you’ve changed your mind again. Do all men lie with such ease?”
Wendy’s words cut like knives, and Yves could feel the rage surging in his chest.

In one sudden motion, he grabbed her by the neck. “Shut up! Who are you to judge me? You
wretch!”
Wendy gasped, choking under the pressure of his grip. Yet, she still sneered, “Am I wrong? You’re the one who let me get away with everything. You’re no better!”
Yves‘ grip tightened around her throat. At that moment, he just wanted her to shut her trap,
by any means necessary.
Wendy tried to fight back and dug her nails deep into his arm, leaving bloody scratches on
them.
Yet, Yves didn’t even flinch. He held on, completely numb to the pain. He only released her when she went silent and dropped her on the ground.
Instantly, cold air rushed into Wendy’s lungs, and she desperately gasped for breath.
