Chapter 13
“But isn’t being general manager a bit… too much?” Zoey’s fingers trembled slightly as she held her phone. The wheels of her suitcase made a rattling sound as they caught on the grooves in the airport floor.
Jojo’s cheerful laughter rang through the phone. “Why would you think that? Zoey, did you forget how we won first place at the university startup competition? Even the professors
couldn’t stop raving about your business proposal!”
She paused before solemnly continuing, “I’ve always believed in you. The only problem was… back then, you only had eyes for Yves.”
That single sentence felt like a sharp needle gently piercing a part of Zoey she’d been trying
not to touch.
As she leaned against a pillar at the airport and watched the bustling travelers rush by, her
memories surged up before she could even stop them.
She had once been the top student in her faculty and had received offers from multiple listed companies after graduation. She could have built something incredible for herself, and that
had indeed once been her dream.
But the moment she fell for Yves, she gave it all up without a second thought to be a good wife. She loved him, so she was willing to give up her dreams.
However, she now realized it had all been a mistake. His heart had always belonged to someone else, so no matter how much she gave, she had never truly mattered to him.
“Zoey, you’ve kept yourself trapped inside that marriage for way too long,” Jojo said, her voice thick with concern. “When I saw how you were doing at that party, I knew that wasn’t
what you deserved.”
Zoey bit down on her lip, her nails digging into her palm.
So, all the things she had deliberately pretended not to see had been clear as day to everyone else. Her voice was hoarse when she asked, “So… all these years, you’ve been waiting for the chance to pull me into your company?”
“Of course!” Jojo raised her voice. “With your leadership skills, you’d shine in the workplace. I held back because you were so focused on your marriage, and I didn’t want to crush the life you were trying to build.
“But now, you’re free! So, you can’t say no to me!”
Zoey was indeed free.

That word hit her like a tidal wave. It felt unfamiliar and distant to her.
Zoey thought about a friend of hers who had told her about every suicide attempt she’d made, and it had shaken her to the core.
After losing her memories, the idea that someone would love another person so much they’d be willing to die for them was something Zoey never quite understood.
Fortunately, she had left that behind.
She looked up and noticed that the sunlight outside the airport was blinding. For the first time in three years, her chest didn’t feel so heavy.
Right then, her phone vibrated with a new message from Jojo. It was an address, followed by a voice message.
“The villa is mine. Move in anytime you want. It’s fully furnished, so you only have to bring your suitcase. Do you want me to come pick you up tomorrow and show you around?”
“It’s alright. I’ll go straight to your company tomorrow.” Zoey smiled. For the first time in a long while, her voice was firm. “I’ll have all my documents ready. I want to familiarize myself with the company as soon as possible, Ms. Knowles.”
The moment Zoey ended the call, her whole body felt lighter. Dragging her suitcase, she headed for the cab stand and swiped across the address on her phone.
