He picked up her dad and drove a fist into his stomach, making him double over. Sera and Mary screamed, begging him to stop, but Nate had just started. If she thought she had seen his worst, she couldn't have been more wrong. She underestimated him, took his threat as empty words— what a grave mistake to make.
He swung his fist to land another deadly blow when Sera crumbled at his feet.
"Please, stop. He'll die, please," she clutched his leg, weeping inconsolably. His fist paused mid-air before he glanced down at her. She was trembling like a leaf, scared to her core. Bending, he wrapped her locks around his tightly clenched fist and hauled her to her feet. She gritted her teeth, enduring the pain searing her scalp.
"So protective of your family, huh," Nate commented, his voice carrying a dark, mocking edge. "But your pleadings and begging are not going to save them now.." his voice climbed a notch as he added, "Unless, of course, your 'family' decides to give me what I want. Then, maybe, I’ll let them live.."
Mary, who was holding bleeding Franklin in her arms, looked up at Nate with hope.
"What do you want?" she asked.
"I want Sera," Nate said. Mary's gaze drifted to Sera, who looked in pain. She looked back at Nate.
"You can have her. Just spare us," Mary answered indifferently, causing Sera's heart to break.
"Mom," she whispered, hurt flickering through her features. She was really going to hand her over to him? She knew they didn't have a choice, but still she didn't even refuse once. Nate smirked.
"I am not going to lose my family because of you. We've put up with you long enough," Mary replied, looking away from her. Nate didn't bother to interrupt them.
"Am I not your family?" Sera asked, disbelief soaking her voice. Mary's sharp gaze met hers.
"No, you're not. You are forced on us by Antonio. You are his illegitimate child," Mary revealed, her words cutting deep into her like a jagged knife.
"What are you saying, mom? Don't lie. I know you're lying," Sera argued, her voice catching. Nate gazed at her; she resembled those tragic statues that exude boundless sorrow but still look ethereal. He was tempted to kiss her.
"I am speaking the truth," Mary said before her features softened into pleading. "We kept you with us since birth. It's time you pay us back. Just go with him, don't let us die." Her words were direct and apathetic. But Sera was bleeding inside. She wasn't able to process the revelation. The people she’d loved, trusted, and called her family were never hers. Everything faded; all she could feel was an aching hollow in her chest. Her legs gave away. She would have collapsed if not for Nate's arm holding her firmly against his chest.
She always felt unwanted, and now she knew why
"Please, mom," she whispered, wanting her to call it all a lie. Perhaps, Nate told her to say it. But...deep down she knew...
Mary looked away, silent and unmoved.
"Sshhhh. You heard her, princess. She doesn't want you. Nobody does. Only I do," he murmured in her ear.
"You can take her away," Mary told Nate, ignoring her pleas.
Nate knew he didn't have much time left. The news of his escape must have already reached his dad's ears. His men will be here any moment now.
