Her Husband's Secret Affair novel Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Adam had just dropped Brenda off at home after their date when his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen, to see a strange number calling. He picked up and heard the familiar voice of Alex.

Before Adam could say a word, Alex’s voice blasted through the phone. “Adam! What the hell did you do to Sophie?”

“Did you kidnap Sophie?” Alex had asked him.

Adam’s grip on the wheel tightened as he tried to keep his cool. “What are you talking about?” His voice was controlled, but his heart began to race. “What happened to Sophie?”

“You’re the last person I saw her with!” Alex snapped. “You have her, don’t you? Where the hell is she?”

Adam furrowed his brow, confusion swirling in his chest. “Why would I have her? Sophie’s not with me—” He stopped himself, the weight of the situation sinking in. “Listen, I don’t know what’s going on, but I’d never hurt her. What the hell is going on, Alex?”

“I’m the one asking the questions here, Adam!” Alex growled. “You tell me why I shouldn’t think you’ve kidnapped Sophie, because right now, I’m this close to calling the cops on your ass.”

Adam’s jaw clenched, his heart pounding harder. The last thing he needed was Alex coming after him, especially when he was already feeling cornered. “Listen,” Adam said, his voice hardening, “I don’t know where Sophie is, okay? You need to calm down. Last time I saw her, she was with you.”

Alex laughed, but it wasn’t the laugh of someone amused. It was dark, cold, and biting. “You think you can get away with this? After everything? I’ve got enough reasons to believe you’ve done something to her, Adam.”

Adam’s blood ran cold at Alex’s words. The accusation hit harder than he expected. “What the hell are you talking about?” he asked, his voice dangerously low. “What reason do I have to do anything to her?”

The sound of police officers’ voices filtered through the phone, and Adam’s chest tightened. “We’ve tracked the number,” one of them said. “It’s been used in a call earlier. We’ve got a location.”

Alex’s voice came back into focus, but it was quieter now, almost calculating. “You better get ready to explain yourself, Adam. The cops are on their way. I know what you’ve done, and I’m not letting you get away with it.”

Brenda’s face flashed through his mind for a split second, but he pushed the thought away. This wasn’t about her, not right now. He had to focus. He needed answers.

He had been with Brenda all night. He was sure it wasn’t Brenda’s doing.

He turned the corner, his eyes scanning the street, and saw the flashing lights of a police car in the distance. They were already setting up near the intersection, blocking off the road. Adam’s pulse quickened.

He knew he had to act fast.

He parked his car on the side of the street, grabbing his phone as he rushed toward the group of officers.

A few glanced over at him as he approached, but it was the officer in charge who stepped forward.
