Chapter 37
Alex slammed the door behind him, his eyes scanning the empty apartment. Sophie’s things were gone. The suitcase, the shoes by the door, her favorite jacket—all absent.
It was official. She was gone.
His chest tightened as he paced across the room, the anger he had felt earlier now simmering down to a slow, gnawing anxiety.
He’d never expected Sophie to make the decision to leave. They had argued, yes, but she had always been the one to calm him down. To make sense of things. But not today. Today, she’d just walked away.
His phone buzzed in his hand, pulling him from his thoughts. He glanced at the screen, but it was just another call from her—his missed calls from earlier. Sophie hadn’t answered once.
“Why aren’t you picking up?” Alex muttered under his breath, frustration bubbling in his chest once again. He ran a hand through his hair and tried calling her again, but still—nothing. The phone just rang on and on.
Then, as if the universe had finally decided to throw him a bone, the phone buzzed again.
Unknown number.
His heart skipped a beat. Could it be? Sophie?
Without a second thought, he swiped the screen to answer. “Hello?”
“Is this Alex?” a woman’s voice crackled through the line. It was shaky, distressed, and there was a hint of panic in her voice.
“Yeah, this is Alex. Who is this?” His pulse was already quickening, an unsettling feeling creeping up his spine.
“I… I need to tell you something,” the woman continued, her voice wavering. “Your girlfriend, Sophie… She’s been kidnapped.”
The words hit Alex like a punch to the stomach. Sophie. Kidnapped. His mind struggled to process the information. This couldn’t be happening.
“Sophie? What… what do you mean? Where is she?” he demanded, his voice sharp. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.
The woman remained quiet.
Before Alex could ask another question, the line went dead. The sudden silence felt deafening. His hand dropped from his ear, and he stared at the phone in disbelief.
“No…” he muttered under his breath. “This can’t be happening.”
His stomach churned. Sophie. Kidnapped.
His mind raced, the fear clouding everything else. The woman had said she didn’t know where Sophie was, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was that he needed to act—and fast.
Without wasting another moment, Alex grabbed his coat and stormed out of the apartment, dialing the police as he went. They answered quickly.
The phone rang. Once. Twice.
“Come on…” Alex muttered impatiently. The ringing continued.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Adam picked up. His voice was calm, almost too calm. “Hello?”
Alex’s jaw clenched. “Did you kidnap Sophie?”
There was a sharp silence on the other end of the line.
For a moment, Alex wondered if Adam had hung up on him, but then the sound of a breath being taken in sharply came through the phone.
“What?” Adam’s voice sounded almost incredulous, as if he couldn’t believe the question.
“Did you kidnap Sophie?” Alex repeated, his voice growing more desperate.
“I—what are you talking about?” Adam’s voice faltered. “Sophie’s—kidnapped?”
Alex could hear the confusion in his voice, but it only made him more suspicious. The pieces weren’t adding up, and everything inside of him was screaming that Adam knew something. That he was hiding something.
“I don’t care if you don’t want to admit it. Sophie’s gone, and I know you’re involved. And you are the only person who can do that,” Alex snapped, his grip tightening on the phone.
