Thalia had been moved by Shannon's repeated insistence to take her back. She'd thought about revealing the truth, but in the end, she chose to keep silent for now.
She didn't want to disappoint Shannon again, at least before they returned. She wanted the limited memories Shannon had of her mother to be free from any sorrow and worry.
But there was one thing Thalia had never anticipated—Fennec.
"Fennec is an insignificant half-demon of the fox clan. I chose her for a temporary body takeover because she was a half-demon whose soul resonated with mine," Thalia explained.
Her eyes shifted to Fennec, and a trace of sorrow flashed in them. "But I never expected to harm her by doing so."
When she'd taken over Fennec's body, only Reuben had noticed. Her inability to leave the alternate world was also a secret known only to Reuben.
Reuben was the only one who could create special mystic symbols of the demon clan on Fennec's body.
"He made you absorb all my supernatural power along with the Might of the Divine Power in me. His plan was to have you replace me as the guardian of the alternate world!"
That'd mean Thalia losing her supernatural power but giving her the chance to return to the original world. And as a replacement, Fennec would be bound in the alternate world forever.
Shannon felt a sharp jolt in her heart. She turned her gaze to Fennec, only to see her lower her head. "I know… But that's okay…"
She murmured, "I was never important anyway…"
Ever since she was a child, Fennec had been the most inconspicuous fox in her clan. Being a half-demon meant any other fox could pick on her. She wasn't assertive, and she'd always thought her life as a fox would be nothing more than this.
But one day, she woke up and found two years had elapsed.
The most respected fox in the clan, Reuben, approached her and told her that her body had been borrowed for two years. As compensation, he granted her enrolment into the Demon Control Agency as a half-demon.
Later, she became a lecturer at the mystic school and carved out a place for herself among human mystic masters. Though the demon clan viewed her with contempt and tried to erase her name, no demon dared challenge her after that.
When the demon clan tried to summon her back, she ignored them and disappeared without a trace. After that, there was no longer any news of her for years.
For the first time, Thalia felt a sense of power coming from someone of her own kind.
Though she knew she could never be as strong as Thalia, she saw the latter as someone she looked up to.
"Mr. Wright didn't force me into any of this… I volunteered, and I'm happy to stay here in your place." Fennec looked at Thalia. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, but a smile spread on her face.
Though she was weak and small, this was her one opportunity to be something more, and to be a half-demon as brilliant as Thalia.
She had no regrets.
