Though news of the Unmelting Bone being contracted was no longer a secret in the mystic arts community, many harbored doubts about its existence, and Kai was one of those skeptics.
Shannon found it puzzling. Kai had never met the Unmelting Bone, so why was he so hostile toward Heston?
This thought lingered in her mind, and she voiced her question.
Kai grew anxious when he heard that. "I did meet it. Back when Benjamin…"
Benjamin had taken Kai along when investigating the emergence of the Unmelting Bone and shielded Shannon from hundreds of bolts of calamity lightning. The former had fallen unconscious for days.
Kai was about to blurt out the entire incident when the sound of an approaching car abruptly cut him off.
Shannon noticed he'd suddenly gone silent and turned her head to see a familiar vehicle pulling up to the gate. The car window rolled down to reveal a blindingly familiar golden light.
This time, Benjamin was tagging along as well. The travel arrangements changed with his arrival, and there were now two vehicles instead of one.
Shannon rode with Benjamin, while Lexie, Fennec, and the Unmelting Bone rode in the second car.
The cars began their journey according to Brooklynn's directions.
Shannon sat next to Benjamin, and her thoughts lingered on Kai's unfinished words. Back when Benjamin…
What happened?
"What happened?" The question in her mind overlapped with Benjamin's voice and pulled her back to reality. He was watching her, and his deep melodic voice carried a subtle undertone.
"You've been staring at me," Benjamin uttered. Though his words were perfectly ordinary, there was something inexplicably ambiguous about the way he said them.
To Shannon, however, the explanation made sense.
Benjamin had never revealed his true identity, and she hadn't pressed him about it. Reflecting on how he'd disappeared afterward, he'd likely left with Luke.
When he reappeared later, the golden light around him had faded to a mere shimmer. The pieces seemed to fit together.
And yet, Shannon couldn't shake the feeling that something was still amiss. She was about to probe further when Tortoise the System suddenly poked its head out of the mystic chest.
It fixed its gaze on her and uttered in an icy voice, "Save the romance for later! The priority is to beat Jordan to find the way to open the alternate world portal. Don't drag me down."
To the system, this was a matter of victory or defeat against Jordan. Shannon was being far too laid-back about it.
Shannon didn't bother to argue and silently pushed the tortoise's head back in.
