"I'm warning you—if anything happens to my wife and child because you're wasting time, I won't let this slide!" Layne shouted.
The fire brigade captain's expression darkened. He stepped forward to forcefully separate Layne from the firefighter the former had just grabbed. "Stop interfering with us!"
After learning they'd be dealing with snakes, two firefighters had donned protective suits on the way. But the sheer number of snakes made it clear that two were far from sufficient.
Once they made their move, the snakes could scatter and escalate the chaos. The team had to strategically contain the swarm before acting.
But Layne paid no mind to their plans. He continued berating the captain, who couldn't respond though he fumed.
The commotion came to the focus of the group in the villa. Poisy, whose attention was attracted to the shouting, feared that the noise might affect Shannon.
When she recognized Layne's voice as the man responsible for the death of her unborn child, her slitted pupils narrowed menacingly. She hissed low and sharp to send out a command in supernatural energy to the swarm of snakes.
"Hiss…" Before the order could be carried out, Shannon, still focusing on amending the fetus soul, spoke without lifting her head, "No harming humans."
Poisy froze. As she reluctantly revised her command, the venomous snakes who were poised to strike halted abruptly. Moments later, a group of non-venomous grass snakes emerged instead, along with a few mildly venomous species.
The snakes moved swiftly and targeted Layne with unerring precision. Before anyone could react, they charged.
"Ah!" Layne screamed in panic and instinctively yanked the fire captain in front of him as a shield.
The captain cursed inwardly, but adhering to his duty to protect civilians, he turned to shield Layne as the snakes swarmed.
The firefighters exchanged baffled looks and had no idea what was going on. They were about to step in and check when the front door creaked open.
Shannon stepped out holding the serpent's egg in her arms. Her expression was calm and composed as she looked toward the group and produced an identification badge.
"Thank you for your assistance. This is a matter under the Special Security Agency, and the situation has been resolved."
She paused and glanced at Layne, who was sprawled on the ground nearby. His limbs were riddled with bite marks. The wounds had darkened and swelled alarmingly.
She decided to be kind for once and said, "You should get him to a hospital immediately." There was still a chance he could be saved.
