Shannon frowned and didn't dwell on it. She moved to her second question.
"Do you know Thalia Wynthorpe?"
Instead of answering directly, Reuben countered, "And who exactly are you referring to?"
Shannon froze. Could there be someone else with a similar-sounding name like Thalia's?
She quickly calmed herself and clarified, "My mentor, Thalia Wynthorpe."
Reuben gave her a glance and lazily replied, "I do." Two words. That was it.
Shannon understood he was doing that on purpose and asked her third question. "Where is she?"
Again, Reuben didn't respond directly to the question. "If you know where she is, what would you do about it?"
"That's none of your concern. Just tell me where she is," Shannon retorted.
This time, Reuben didn't bother to respond. He simply stared at her.
Shanno waited a long while before saying, "You said I could ask three questions, but you haven't answered any of them directly."
What was supposed to be her inquiry turned into his interrogation. Shannon couldn't shake the feeling that Reuben was toying with her.
Reuben smiled faintly, but his eyes were cold. "I said you could ask three questions, but I never promised to answer them. Who are you to demand answers from me?"
His voice suddenly grew sharp. An intense pressure emanated from him and surged toward Shannon like an invisible wave.
Her hands clenched slightly at her sides, but she stood her ground and stared at him with unwavering determination.
Despite the curling tendrils from the candles, the atmosphere in the room dropped to an icy chill.
The silence stretched for about 30 seconds before Reuben withdrew his oppressive air and leaned back indifferently in his chair.
After pondering on it, Shannon decided to probe further. "If I agree to join, are you in a position to make that decision?"
Though she couldn't sense any supernatural strength from Reuben, her instincts told her that he wasn't entirely human. The fact that he could command people from the Demon Control Agency hinted at his high status.
If he could recruit a human, he had to have significant authority.
Reuben suddenly chuckled at his words, but the humor in his expression soon turned to sharp-edged danger. The oppressive aura returned and was stronger than before.
He coldly retorted, "Who do you think you're testing, kiddo?"
Shannon felt an invisible force pressing on her and sent her heart pounding rapidly.
This was the second time. This was the second time he'd tried to intimidate her.
She was growing annoyed.
