Mike bubbled with excitement.
He clutched the oversized three-million-dollar check and refused to let go. Then, he insisted on being photographed from every angle possible.
The setting sun bathed the horizon in hues of gold and crimson. It was a stunning backdrop to mark the official closing of this year's college tournament.
Still holding onto the check, Mike eagerly proposed a big feast to celebrate. Of course, it shouldn't come from his share of the prize money.
He turned hopefully to Hector, who the real financier was.
Hector didn't object. He smiled and said, "Dinner has been arranged. Let's head back, freshen up, and change into something more appropriate.
"I've arranged a dinner party tonight and invited representatives from all mystic schools participating in the tournament, along with their lecturers. We'll treat it as a post-tournament exchange event."
Shannon's team was momentarily stunned. When had college tournaments ever come with a post-tournament exchange event?
As Lexie carefully raised her doubts, Hector smiled and responded, "There wasn't such a tradition, but there will be after I host it tonight."
They were utterly baffled by his response.
Even Shannon was caught off guard by Hector's initiative. She asked, "How could you have gotten in touch with lecturers and students from other mystic schools?"
It wasn't that she doubted Hector's ability, but he'd spent most of his time shadowing their group and had little opportunity to network with anyone in the mystic arts community after arriving in Jamborough, not to mention inviting them to the dinner party.
She worried he might face disappointment. After all, mystic masters weren't known for embracing formal events like dinner parties.
Hector replied, "Why would I have to handle the invitations? I'll just have to host the dinner party and leave the invitations to Baxter."
On the other hand, Hector saw nothing extraordinary about it. If it didn't work out, it would've just cost a little money. But if it did, it'd give him a great opportunity to expand his connections in the mystic arts community.
Hector was deeply influenced by Adam's teachings. Building relationships was the first step to establishing influence in any field. Once shared interests were identified, the work was half done.
Mike was thoroughly impressed. He decided this must be one of the reasons Hector was elected to inherit a multibillion-dollar corporation. He approached the latter and hoped to glean some wisdom.
As the group talked, they walked toward their cars. But before they could reach their destination, someone stepped out to block their path.
It was Draco, one of the lower-profile judges during the tournament. Despite his role, his presence had almost been unnoticeable throughout the event.
He fixed his eyes on Shannon and said, "Congratulations on your victory in the tournament. As promised, Mr. Wright has agreed to meet you. Now come with me."
