"Are you happy now?"
The expressionless Skylar parted his lips, ready to answer Warren, but Olivia suddenly squeezed over.
She acted as if they were alone and emphasized, "Skylar, what happened to your shirt? It's burned over here! And the back of your hand—it's scorched red!"
She grabbed his arm, examining his condition and looking sympathetic.
It was only then Warren noticed Skylar's burned clothes and burned hand. It was obvious Maya's fire thunder caused it.
Since his injury was light and Maya's pathetic state was more eye-catching, it took Warren a long time to realize it.
Frankly, Skylar hadn't noticed his condition. His hand was only red without a blister, so it should recover in two days.
Thus, he felt uneasy looking at Olivia's exaggerated reaction. "I'm fine."
He was ready to pull his arm away when she yanked it back over. "Like heck you are!"
Her face was solemn. "If I were your mom or dad, I would've felt so heartbroken to see you like this! In our parents' eyes, we're practically still babies. If all they do is criticize you without offering concern, what's the point of having a father?"
"Why do I feel like she's talking about me…" Warren thought.
Then, Olivia turned her head, as if finally noticing Warren's presence, looking both surprised and sincere. "Mr. Rutherford, I didn't mean you. Please don't take it to heart."
Warren parted his lips, ready to respond, but was quickly interrupted by her. "I saw how concerned and protective you were toward someone that's not even your own child. You're surely a caring and big-hearted person, aren't you?
In all of Jamborough, the Rutherford family valued rules and traditions the most. Yet, the patriarch had broken the rule for Maya once again.
Warren knew what he meant. Looking at the frozen lake, he gave a faint sigh after a long pause.
"I feel indebted to her… Our family owes it to her."
Valentino said, "I've warned you before. You can make amends with her, but you should never sacrifice your own child in return. The Rutherfords might owe her something, but Skylar does not.
"You'll only make him drift away in the long run."
Warren's heart clenched at his words, but he soon comforted himself, thinking, "No matter what, Sky is my son. I'm sure he'll forgive me one way or another. Soon enough, he'll understand it all."
