Compared to Eva's naivety and Scott's dismissive attitude, Hank's feelings were far more complicated.
He glared at Scott until the laughter finally subsided. Then, he turned exasperatedly toward Eva and patiently explained, "There won't be a baby brother or sister. It's fake."
Eva's face was a mix of disappointment. "Oh… okay."
Then, Hank seemed to think of something. His expression turned serious as he solemnly instructed, "And this is Dad's secret. You're not allowed to tell anyone about it!"
The thought of Eva's bragging at school about her pregnant dad made Hank feel a wave of dread.
Though Eva was still clueless, she was obedient. She wouldn't tell anyone since Hank said not to.
But Scott was reminded of a scenario by Hank's warning. His subdued laughter erupted again as he doubled over Caleb, and his body shook with uncontrollable laughter.
Caleb gave him a pat on the head and reminded him to get a grip. Still, the image lingered in Caleb's mind, and he was equally suppressing a grin.
But something seemed to cross his mind for a moment. The faint smile on his lips faded, and he instinctively reached out to touch his flat stomach.
Speaking of it, he'd felt a little strange since the ordeal with the Fenris jerboa.
His belly wasn't bulging like Alex's but it seemed to be shrinking. The slight bit of weight he'd gained from neglecting his workouts had inexplicably vanished.
…
Shannon had no idea how her cousins would react to Alex's pseudocyesis. After retrieving the unfinished box of chocolate, she returned to her new apartment.
But the moment the box was lifted, a talisman hidden beneath it glowed. A clear female voice resonated through the room, "Heavenly signs appear, reveal your form; close all gates, and you shall seal!"
The Fenris jerboa attempted to flee after sensing danger, but it was trapped by chains glowing with spiritual light in the blink of an eye.
A barrier rose around it to trap it completely.
Shannon stepped into view from the shadowed hallway. She came up to the living room and softly commanded, "Lights on."
The voice-activated lights lit up the room and flooded the space with brightness.
The Fenris jerboa blinked at the ceiling in confusion. It was clear it hadn't expected the lights to work.
