Shannon looked at Alex with an expression that seemed to condemn him for his stinginess.
Before he could refute it, she continued, "Since you're not in a rush, you might as well wait for the effects of the drug to wear off. Based on the average gestation period, it'd probably take a month or two."
Or maybe three to four months. Or perhaps at most ten months. It'd eventually pass. All he had to do was endure it.
Since Alex was so convinced that she refused to help on purpose, she saw no reason to waste her time on finding a solution.
Alex felt a wave of tightness in his chest after hearing Shannon's words. But faced with the choice of enduring pain for two months and giving away the company he'd established, he chose the former.
It was just a couple of months, and he could handle it.
Indeed, what once seemed unbearable became tolerable when the alternative was something that couldn't be accepted. Alex gave up on seeking help from the cold-hearted Shannon.
Though he said he'd endure, he secretly consulted the family doctor to see if there was anything that could be done to alleviate his situation.
The doctor was at a loss. "Normally, pseudocyesis symptoms like these are psychological and stem from a wife's pregnancy. For such cases, there are medications to ease anxiety that can help.
"But since your condition is caused by a drug, reducing psychological stress won't help."
Noticing the dark look on Alex's face, the doctor quickly added, "But since your symptoms are similar to pregnancy, you could try controlling your emotions.
"Avoid anger and irritation, maintain a calm mindset, and adjust your diet accordingly…"
Alex found the advice similar to what Linda had received when she was pregnant. His expression darkened further. "What's the use of giving me all this pregnancy advice!"
What he needed was a solution to his current predicament!
Scott learned about the incident only after returning from home. The same went for Hank, who returned from Seastone University which wasn't too far away. It was Alex, his father who was involved, so he had to return to check on things.
When the two heard the entire story from Caleb, they were stunned. Before they could process the absurdity of it all, a small figure came running from the room.
It was none other than Eva, who'd been curious about what they were whispering about.
When she heard that Alex was having a phantom pregnancy, she didn't understand what it was. All she knew was that it was similar to being pregnant.
Her face lit up with excitement as she asked, "Hank! Am I going to have a little brother or sister?'
"Pfft!" Scott had been holding back his laughter ever since hearing about Alex's pseudocyesis. Hearing Eva's question, he finally couldn't contain himself and burst into a fit of laughter.
