Kai sat on the second level of the carousel and savored his dessert as he admired the fireworks.
Suddenly, his pupils constricted sharply as if sending something unusual. He looked up, and his gaze fixated on the sky above the clouds.
The next moment, his horn began to pop restlessly. He'd just sensed a presence similar to his kind, but it wasn't quite the same either. It felt stronger and more advanced.
It was a dragon! His potential kin!
Kai's horn quivered uncontrollably in excitement. As he saw no one was around, he transformed into his true self and began wobbly flapping into the sky.
…
On the second floor of the castle, Shannon watched the last of the fireworks fade away. A thought seemed to strike her as she suddenly asked Benjamin, "You told the guests that I'm your fiancée, does that not bother you?"
Benjamin had thought she might confront him about announcing their relationship without seeking her approval, and he was shocked that she'd ask such a different question.
He met her gaze with his deep black eyes and calmly countered, "Why should it bother me?"
"You're the head of the Cooper family after all…"
Shannon paused. She pointed at herself and said, "And I am, first and foremost, a practitioner of mystic arts. Being a Jensen comes second."
Though their families might appear compatible, Shannon had never considered developing a relationship with Benjamin. She knew their worlds were different, and she couldn't shoulder the role of a fiancée.
The Cooper family wouldn't accept a lady devoted to mystic arts either.
His black eyes flickered with amusement.
After a pause, he replied in a calm voice, "Well, that'd depend. If the fiancée in question is… you." Benjamin's voice trailed off before he could utter the last word.
Almost instantly, both he and Shannon sensed something amiss. The latter turned her head sharply and spotted a tiny silver wyrm wobbling clumsily through the air. Her eyes widened in shock.
"Kai!"
She couldn't bother to hear Benjamin's full answer as she raised her hand. A camouflage talisman combined with chains formed from spiritual energy shot in Kai's direction.
Meanwhile, Kai was still struggling to ascend, but flying wasn't his strong suit as a wyrm. The higher he climbed, the more the night wind buffeted him and sent him swaying mid-air.
