Grace felt a little more at ease. "You’re right. Time reveals everything. It’s easy to play generous now, but once they’re married and living together day to day, we’ll see if Houston is really as good as he seems."
After dinner, still in a sour mood, Ethan pushed his plate away and stood up. "I’m going out for a walk." Without another word, he stormed out, slamming the door behind him— leaving everyone at the table stunned.
It was obvious he was upset.
Grace frowned. "What’s he getting so worked up about?"
Vivian shot her a glare. "It’s your fault, Mom. You just had to keep talking about money. You know he’s struggling right now— why rub it in?"
When Aaron heard what had happened, he was quick to scold Grace. "Ethan’s internship is almost over. Once he starts getting paid full-time, things will get better. Why make things harder for him now?"
Grace mumbled, "It’s not like I was asking for much. He could’ve at least brought some fruit."
Vivian, frustrated, stood and hurried after Ethan.
Aaron could only sigh heavily.
Meanwhile—
At the Marshall house, the atmosphere couldn’t have been more different.
Linda, unusually warm, smiled at Houston. "It’s getting late. I don’t want you driving home this late, Houston. Why don’t you stay here tonight?"
"Gladly," Houston said, more than happy to.
His easygoing attitude made Linda beam— she took it as a sign of respect for his elders.
Sam, however, looked less pleased. This guy’s really made himself at home already, he thought, his chest tight with frustration.
Houston stood, picking up the dishes. "I’ll help with the cleanup."
Linda stopped him with a smile. "No need, Houston. You’ve had a long day already. Let Sam take care of it."
Sam silently picked up the dishes and walked off.
Linda turned back to Houston. "Houston, why don’t you take Rose out for a walk? She’s been gaining a little weight lately and doesn’t like to exercise. We’ve been a little worried about her."
Rose protested. "I am not gaining weight! I’m perfectly healthy."
Houston smiled warmly. "Of course. You’re perfect just the way you are."
Linda shook her head with a sigh. "Don’t spoil her too much." Then she carried the dishes into the kitchen.
Rose tugged on Houston’s hand. "Come on, Houston. Let’s go for a walk."
