Allison curled her lips into a frosty smile. "What do you want to say?"
"Allie, like I've told you, all men are the same. Don't think Joshua's any better than me. Do you believe me now?"
"Oh."
"I saw the news about you calling off the engagement. You two are over, right? So, now that you're single, can I try my luck?"
"No way."
Allison stood up, done with Shawn's nonsense.
As she turned to leave, Shawn grabbed her hand. But before he could utter another word, Allison twisted his wrist with a sharp, cracking sound.
"Ouch!" Shawn yelped in pain, his reaction instinctive.
Allison yanked her hand away, her eyes burning with undisguised disgust. "Shawn, I was clear last time. Stop pestering me. Don't you get it?"
Shawn looked hurt, still staring at Allison with a hint of obsession. "Allie, I can't. I can't let go of you."
"Shawn, you make me sick." Allison walked away without a backward glance.
Shawn hurried after her. "Joshua was definitely seeing that actress while he was with you. The minute you broke it off, rumors about him and that actress went wild. Did you end it because you caught him cheating?"
Allison pressed her lips together, her expression icy, quickening her pace without acknowledging Shawn's question.
Shawn kept at it, "Did you hear about tonight's big gala? Joshua walked the red carpet with that actress. They're going public, Allie. It's time to move on."
At the mention of them "going public," Allison's steps faltered.
Shawn smirked. "Allie, I—"
"Get lost!"
"Allie, don't shut me out. I know you're—"
"Let go of me! Damn it!"
"Sir, if you persist, we'll have to call the police."
"I'm not harassing her. I told you, we're together!"
...
Back in her room, Allison shut the door and leaned against it, staring blankly at the floor.
After a while, she numbly pulled out her phone and checked the trending topics. Joshua's photo with Megan was the first thing she saw.
"Snap!" Her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor.
The evening breeze blew through the window, making the white curtains flutter.
Allison stood there as if struck by lightning, her blood running cold, her face pale under the dim light.
