Coffee spilled over the mug's edge, soaking into the carpet and leaving a dark stain. Brian glanced at the mug and let out a small "tsk." "Buddy, don't worry. Allison isn't that kind of girl."
Joshua stood there, stunned, his voice hoarse as he asked, "Did she really agree?"
Brian hesitated before replying, "On New Year's Eve, you know how it was. She saw you with Megan, and you two even joked about getting a room together. I mean, if I were Allison, I'd be upset too. She's probably just trying to get back at you or maybe she was drunk and didn't mean it."
"I didn't..." Joshua's voice was tight, "I didn't say anything about getting a room."
"It was Megan who said it. But it all sounded the same."
A moment of silence passed.
Joshua composed himself and said, "I need you to do something for me."
...
As Allison left the law firm after work, she noticed a white McLaren parked not too far away. Brian was leaning against the car, looking down at his phone, seemingly waiting for someone. Since he was at the firm’s entrance, it was obvious he was waiting for her. Allison walked over, and as soon as Brian saw her, he greeted her with a cheerful smile.
"Allison, finally off work!"
"Brian, are you looking for me?" Allison glanced behind Brian. "Where's Sabrina? Didn't she come with you?"
Brian replied, "Nah, I'm here alone today. I need to talk to you about something."
"What is it?"
"About New Year's Eve, it was pretty thoughtless of me to call Joshua over. It messed up the vibe. I'm really sorry. I’ve reserved a table at a restaurant and would love to treat you to dinner. Are you free?"
Allison frowned slightly, "No need, Brian. I get it, it’s water under the bridge now. I have plans tonight anyway."
"What plans?" Brian asked reflexively.
"Uh..."
Lawyers were terrifying, with those eyes that seemed to see right through everything.
"No... of course not. I came on my own to apologize. It has nothing to do with anyone else."
Allison remained unconvinced.
Brian took out a set of keys and handed them over, "This is a little gift from me as an apology. Please accept it."
Allison looked down at the keys, then glanced at the white McLaren in the distance, her voice steady, "If I recall correctly, a McLaren P1 starts at over a million dollars, right? A bit extravagant for a New Year's apology, don't you think?"
Brian, unfazed, continued the lie, "Why not? I upset you that night, and Sabrina's been nagging me constantly ever since. Her nagging is worse than an endless mantra. A million dollars is nothing. I know you don't need it, but just accept it as a small token. Sabrina will keep at it if you don’t. Consider it doing me a favor, would you?"
Allison's face was calm, her clear, bright eyes reflecting a hint of amusement as she quietly observed Brian, "Brian, tell me the truth. Did Joshua buy this car? Tell him I don't want it. If we're broken up, we should make a clean break. No messy entanglements."
Brian felt a shiver run down his spine, thinking to himself that lawyers were indeed tough to deceive.
