As dawn crept in, the gentle morning light slipped through the window, softly illuminating Allison's tired face. She had spent the entire night by the window, only managing to drift into a light sleep when the first hints of daylight appeared.
Her sleep was troubled, filled with fragmented dreams about Joshua that jolted her awake several times. In one particularly vivid dream, she saw Joshua and Megan standing together, hand in hand. Joshua's eyes sparkled with joy as he told her he was getting married and hoped she’d be there to witness it. In the dream, Allison cried.
She woke up with traces of tears still on her cheeks. A soft knock at the door broke the silence. "Ms. Allison, are you up? It’s lunchtime," the housekeeper called gently.
Allison wiped away her tears and opened the door. "You can eat without me. I need to shower and change first," she replied.
The housekeeper paused, noticing Allison’s pale skin and dark shadows under her eyes. "Ms. Allison, did you not sleep well?" she asked cautiously. She wasn't aware of the gossip about Joshua or the recent breakup between them. To her, Mr. Fisher and Ms. Allison were a couple, and Mr. Fisher had specifically asked her to look after Allison, so her concern was genuine.
Allison felt utterly drained. She’d only managed about five hours of restless sleep. "I’m okay, really. No need to worry."
The housekeeper nodded, not pressing further. "Alright, I’ll keep the food warm for you."
"Thanks."
Javier paused, sensing the truth behind her words. Her voice was weak, a clear sign she hadn’t been taking care of herself. He sighed quietly before continuing, "Allie, the press conference is over. We officially announced the cancellation of the engagement. I’ve arranged for a car to pick you up after lunch."
Allison’s lips quivered as she searched for words, but all she could manage was a faint "Okay."
"Make sure you eat something. I’ll let you go now."
Javier understood that his daughter needed space, so he hung up after relaying the message. Allison stayed seated on the floor for a bit, gathering her strength before finally dragging herself to the bathroom, feeling like a shadow of herself.
