From that day on, Kate stayed by his side. She was, admittedly, a convincing stand-in. As promised, she mimicked Allison’s style and hairstyle, even using Allison’s favorite perfume. Shawn loved wrapping his arms around Kate from behind and inhaling her scent. Their silhouettes were nearly identical, and their fragrance was indistinguishable, which made Shawn deliriously happy.

And so, he deceived himself, sinking deeper into this illusion. But a stand-in was just that—a stand-in, never able to truly fill the void Allison had left in his heart. Kate could never truly become Allison.

Kate’s expression froze, her pale face hidden in the dim light. “That’s impossible!” Kate’s voice rose involuntarily, “Their relationship is so strong, they’re about to get married. You must be mistaken!”
