Colt chuckled, “Hey, you won’t believe who I just bumped into—your ex, Allison.”

Shawn froze mid-step. He was right at the office door but stopped, not making any move to open it.

Colt paused for a second, then added, “And her new guy, you know, the Fisher family’s golden boy. They seemed really happy, like, all lovey-dovey, holding hands and everything.”

Shawn stayed quiet for a moment. His breath came out heavier, and his voice got all tight and rough, “Where?”

“At Harper’s Grove in Sunnyvale, right there at the base of the Western Snowy Mountains.”

Allison had taken care of the trip's accommodations.

The quaint town hadn’t been overrun by tourists yet; it was small, with no fancy hotels, just cozy bed-and-breakfasts.

Allison picked a B&B with a killer view. You could see the snow-capped mountains right out the window.

It was the height of tourist season at Harper’s Grove, buzzing with people and full of life.

On the first day, worn out from traveling, Allison and Joshua decided to stay in and watch movies.

Allison turned on the TV and chose a classic love story, Atonement, starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley.

Inside, the room was toasty, the lighting soft and dim, setting a cozy vibe. Allison was nestled against Joshua’s shoulder, totally absorbed in the film.

Even though she knew it was a tearjerker, Allison couldn’t stop her tears at the ending.

Her eyes were red, and her voice was a bit choked, “It’s such a shame, Cecilia and Robbie loved each other so much, but Briony’s lie kept them apart for years. They never even got to see each other again.”

Allison sighed, her voice a mix of frustration and sadness, “Atonement, huh? How can Briony ever make up for it? The main characters lost their chance to be together forever.”

Joshua gently wiped the tears from her cheek with his thumb. “Good girls get treats, you know.” He held out his hand, showing a candy in his palm.

Allison’s voice was still a bit stuffy. “You’re treating me like a little kid.”

Joshua grinned with affection. “Well, you are my little girl.”

Allison picked the candy from his hand, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth. It was her favorite peach flavor.

With Joshua's comforting and the candy finished, Allison's mood lifted quite a bit.

“Feeling better now?” he asked, his voice a bit raspy.

Allison nodded slightly.

Joshua leaned in, whispering softly in her ear, “Now that you’re all cheered up, don’t you think I deserve a little reward too?”
