Fleeing the Nightmarish Father novel Chapter 38

She shivered, pausing for a moment. I looked into her soul teasingly, indulging in her slight tremble and flustered expression.

“Uh.. what were you saying, Jacey?”

Shaking her head, she ignored my words and turned back to Jacey. I muffled a chuckle at her reaction before leaning back to enjoy my view.

But then again, my thoughts struck me and murdered my mood.

‘What I lack to not gain your attention? In fact, why do I need it? Leave it.’ Mentally scolding myself, I rolled my eyes which Sam noticed.

I didn’t like that guy. If it wasn’t because of Jacey…

“Dariel, how long are you going to look so strict? Girls like guys who can smile, not stones. Don’t they, Saafia?” He chuckled.

“It’s nothing like this, Sam.” Saafia giggled, glancing at me from her shoulder.

“Anyways, I saw on the news about Veronica and Jared. Not only did she cheat, Jared also did money laundering. What bastards.” Sam continued, pinching my nerves but it was my fault that I made the matter public to humiliate them.

“Maybe this is destiny. You are fortunate to have such an innocent and beautiful lady in your life. They left so she could come. Now that’s what one call match made in heavens. Don’t you think so, Baby?” He laughed, leaning back to hold Jacey.

“Yeah. That’s what we call fate.” Jacey giggled, grinning at us as we had no idea what was there to be happy about us.

Saafia smiled, lowering her eyes beautifully, holding her glass with a tender voice.

“I would gladly consider it destiny but your brother here loves going in the opposite direction.”

She started sweetly but frowned in the end, glaring at me.

“It's not my fault if our perspectives are different.” I sighed, frustrated with her blaming me.

Not my fault if we are different. That she wanted to work this pathetic marriage out and I don’t.

That she wanted to be emotionally weak which I won’t let her be at all cost. This world is not for people like her.

‘She’ is wrong.

“You guys sure are weird.” Sam mumbled.

“Leave it, Baby. Dariel never liked showing affection in public in the first place.” Jacey defended me, motioning to him to stop.

“Really? How can you not when you have her? Just like I do~” He smirked, leaning forward and pecking her lips.

“Stop.” She laughed, making me and Saafia awkward by his overly affectionate demeanor.

“You guys look cute together.” Saafia mumbled, smiling faintly.

“Thank you.”

She looked… sad. Why?

Did she want the same kind of fondness… from me? Goddammit this woman would break my patience one day.

Rubbing my temples to display my distress with her. I remained silent, letting them talk and laugh, focusing on my food for the rest of the time.

“When I have told you to not have expectations from me, that I could never be the one for you then why are you doing this?” I whispered, bringing my hand to touch her but didn’t.

She had proven my cold hands were incapable of comforting her. She could never feel protected with me.

“It’s your fault. You are foolishly breaking your heart. I have told you people like you die miserably, that people like you only receive heartbreak in the end.”

Ending in a growl, I pointed my finger at her. She flinched, jumping back in fright when I told her the truth.

“You are doing this to yourself. You are breaking your heart. You-”

Before I could continue placing the mirror before her so she could see the true side of our relationship, she put her hand before, almost near my lips to stop me.

“Stop it! I understand!... I… get what you are trying to say. It was my fault… always has been and you..”

Her lips were shaking, tears brimmed with heartbreak. Maybe the truth was too painful for her.

Curling her hands in a fist, she almost cursed but stopped herself, turning her head to the side before hissing at me.

“You could never understand what I feel.”

She walked away and I kept staring at her in confusion. Having no idea what I did to make her infuriated this time except for the truth.

I was not wrong. It was reality to help her come out of her world of delusions.

What did I do?
