“Auntie.”
Liz gently tugged at my dress hem, looking up at me with her big, watery eyes, her tone soft and pleading: “Can we eat dinner together?”
1 actually didn’t want to have too much interaction with Evan.
But I couldn’t bring myself to refuse Liz’s request, so I nodded and said: “Alright, let’s eat together.”
The hot spring hotel’s restaurant was buffet–style with a rich variety, especially an abundance of desserts.
The lighting in the hall was gentle, spilling down from crystal chandeliers, warming the wooden tables and making even the dishes glow softly.
Evan went to get food for Liz, leaving just me and Liz at the table.
“Does your arm still hurt?”
Liz shook her head.
After a while, Evan returned, placing one of the plates in front of Liz and handing her a knife and fork.
Liz sat quietly and began eating in small bites.
Evan asked: “Does it taste good?”
Liz nodded.
Evan glanced at me, then said to Liz: “Auntie saved Liz earlier. Say thank you to auntie Aurora.”
Liz’s little tongue licked the cake on her fork, then looked up at me and said softly: “Thank you, auntie.”
So he had specifically brought the child over to thank me.
Hearing this, I replied warmly: “You’re welcome.”
Liz looked at Evan again. Evan said: “It’s okay, keep eating.”
iz buried her head and continued eating.
Evan shifted his attention away from his niece, took a bite of food, then asked me: “Did you come alone?”
Me: “Mm.”
le seemed somewhat surprised, and as if thinking about something, asked tentatively: “Why didn’t you come with Ferris?”
But Liz didn’t speak, though she seemed in good spirits, swimming around me in circles.
