Breaking Free from the Ex-Husband novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Iris had stayed in all day. Just after five in the afternoon, Megan called.

Hi, Megan.

Iris, I heard you’re pregnant. With twins! Is that true?

Megan’s voice was tender and happy in a way Iris had seldom heard.

She used to have two sons. Julian Hale was the oldest, Heriberto the younger.

The family had always pinned their hopes on Julian, and he was meant to take over the Hale Group.

But five years ago, after a skiing accident, he never made it back.

With Julian gone, Heriberto was all they had. Megan had been against him marrying Iris at first, but once it happened, she started hoping for grandkids.

Recently, Megan and her husband, Charlie, had been abroad, visiting the place where Julian’s accident happened, marking the anniversary of his death.

Iris hadn’t wanted to bother them, so she kept the pregnancy to herself.

But now that Megan had asked, there was no reason to hide it. Yes,Iris said.

Oh, thank God!Megan squealed. You’re finally pregnant. Charlie and I just got back. Come over for dinner tonight. I need to see my grandbabies!

Iris almost said no. Things with Heriberto were still too tense.

But Megan had said it was about the babies, not her.

Iris owed a lot to the Hale family, and Eleanor Hale, Heriberto’s grandmother, had always felt like family. No matter what was going on with Heriberto, she couldn’t turn her back on them.

So finally, she said, Alright.

She dressed up a little and had Nathaniel’s driver take her to the Hale’s mansion.

Iris and Heriberto arrived within seconds of each other.

As she stepped out of the car, she saw him standing at the top of the stairs. Tall, still, caught in the last golden light of the day.

Tall and elegant, he was standing in the afterglow. But even that light couldn’t take the edge off his cold expression.

The day they first met felt just like this. Her grandmother had brought her here to meet Eleanor.

And Heriberto had stood in that same golden light.

But he had looked at Iris with warmth.

Now, the moment he saw her, his eyes narrowed, and she saw the anger behind them.

She held his gaze for a second, then looked away. After saying something to the driver, she started toward the house.

As she walked past, Heriberto reached out and grabbed her wrist.

His grip was firm, his hand broad and warm.

Long fingers, sharp knucklesjust like him. He drew her in, but always kept her at arm’s length.

Nathaniel didn’t bring you himself?Heriberto scoffed, staring at her.

Then his eyes dropped to her belly. It’s his, isn’t it?

She looked up at him.

At 1.68 meters, even in flats, she barely reached his shoulder.

The sky was painted in soft shades of sunlight. It was so beautiful.

But his scornful expression cut through it all.

We’ll both find out who’s the father when I give birth, she said coolly.
