Breaking Free from the Ex-Husband novel Chapter 4

His chiseled features were frozen in a harsh cold.

The car screeched to a halt right in front of Iris and Nathaniel.

Iris had just steadied herself, stepping back from Nathaniel’s arms, when she caught sight of the car.

She glanced over, her face calm.

The rear window rolled down, revealing Heriberto’s sharp, icy profile.

He turned his head, and their eyes met.

Meeting his harsh, suffocating gaze, Iris gave a taunting smile. Did you rush back to check if I took anything of yours?

Heriberto’s eyes fixed on her, and he let out a scornful laugh. You really think this stunt is gonna make me think any better of you?

Iris’s smile deepened. It’s your problem. It has nothing to do with me.

Oh?Heriberto squinted at her, grinding his teeth. Get rid of the bastards in your belly, and we’ll have no more ties.

Hearing this, Nathaniel froze, his gaze flickering to Iris in disbelief.

Bastards?!

Iris let out a bitter laugh, but inside, it felt like a dull blade was slowly cutting through her chest, pain so sharp it took her breath away. She tried to defend herself, but no words came out.

The pain was unbearable. She poured every ounce of strength into holding back the tears, not wanting to look com- pletely broken in front of Heriberto.

Every time we were together, I used protection. Do you honestly think the babies could be mine?Heriberto shot back.

These past few days, he had thought it over and over but couldn’t figure out how Iris could be pregnant.

The only answer that made sense to him was that the babies weren’t his.

Mr. Hale, since you’re already divorced from Iris, it’s none of your business whose babies she’s carrying. Let me be the first to wish you and Melanie a happy and lasting marriage.

Nathaniel came to his senses. He threw his arm provocatively around Iris’s shoulders, pulling her close. His blessings were heartfelt.

Heriberto’s cold gaze snapped to Nathaniel, his lips curling into a mocking smile dripping with contempt.

288 Vouchers

I’ve been using her for nearly three years, and you don’t even mind? I didn’t know you had a taste for secondhand goods.

Using her

Secondhand goods

Those words cut into Iris like a sharp knife.

It felt like blood was gushing out.

Ten years of love. Nearly three years of unwavering devotion. And all along, the man she gave everything to treated her like nothing more than an object.

Now, she was nothing but a secondhand possession.

Facing Heriberto, her smile twisted, sharper than his own, her eyes all red.

Iris is a good, charming girl. You have no right to hurt her.Nathaniel’s furious voice rang out.

Nathaniel,Iris cut him off. Save your breath. Let’s just go.
