Breaking Free from the Ex-Husband novel Chapter 16

Iris smiled at him. Then ask someone to check the movers that day, see if anything seems off, and question them.

But don’t really hurt them, she instructed again.

Nathaniel looked at her with a bit of frustration. Okay, leave it to me. I’ll call someone to do it right now.

Nathaniel’s people were highly efficient. By noon that day, they locked down the suspect.

There were five people who helped Heriberto pack that day. Nathaniel asked someone to contact each of them.

Among them, there was one called Gavin Mercer. His daughter had leukemia and was currently being treated in the hospital.

Gavin came from an average family. His parents were old and didn’t have a pension. He had three kids. His wife did- n’t make much money. Once his daughter got sick, they used up all their savings and had to borrow money to pay for her treatment.

That day, he went to Acme Villa to help with packing. Seeing all the fancy stuff, he got a bad idea. He figured with so many jewels and valuable things around, he could just pocket a few and no one would notice.

Even if they did, it would be a long time later, and the owner probably wouldn’t bother to follow up.

After he took the items, he went to a secondhand luxury goods store and sold a Bulgari diamond bracelet to get mon- ey for his daughter’s treatment.

Since he didn’t have the invoice or box, he sold it at a really low price, but it was enough to cover his daughter’s treat- ment for a while.

Though he had money for his daughter’s treatment, Gavin felt uneasy because he got it the wrong way. As soon as Nathaniel’s people reached out, they knew something was off.

Before they could even start questioning Gavin, he confessed.

He knelt down and pleaded for mercy, promising to get the bracelet back and return everything, but begged them not to call the cops.

He said if he went to jail, his family would have no income, and his daughter would be left to die.

Iris listened to everything Nathaniel told her on the phone. She quietly asked, Which hospital is his daughter in? What’s the room number? I’ll go see her.

What? Do you want to help him?Nathaniel saw through her right away.

Iris nodded. Yeah, if Gavin can return everything, I’ll cover all the treatment costs for his daughter from now on.

Nathaniel thought for a moment. Okay, but don’t go alone. Have someone with you.

Got it,said Iris.

Iris went to the hospital and soon met Gavin’s daughter.

The little girl was around five, with a pale, thin face. It was sweltering hot, but she wore a beanie. Underneath, her big, bright eyes looked extra heartwrenching.
