Chapter 296
Lancey shot Richard a look that clearly said “stop talking.”
Young couples naturally wanted their privacy.
But then Anastasia spoke up cheerfully, “That sounds great! I love when we can all get together.”
This scene didn’t go unnoticed by Valeria, who was watching from a distance. Her eyes darkened as she muttered through gritted teeth, “Such a fake.”
Valeria’s heart twisted with jealousy. She couldn’t understand how Anastasia–who was clearly damaged goods–could win over the Rhodes family parents so easily.
Meanwhile, she had to lurk in the shadows like some kind of rat, unable to show her face.
Today, Megan was having her usual get–together with the other socialites, but this time she hadn’t invited Valeria along.
Maybe it was because of her obvious pregnancy, or maybe Megan was still annoyed about that last tea party incident.
But it ate at her–why did Anastasia get to be happy while she suffered?
“Valeria, just hang in there. This too shall pass,” Whitney whispered beside her.
Valeria turned to look at Whitney, whose own social position was pretty awkward.
Even though Whitney had managed to claw her way up and replace Sheila as the Kingsley family’s daughter–in–law, her methods hadn’t been subtle. The elite social circle didn’t exactly welcome her with open arms.
Those women rarely invited Whitney to their gatherings, and when she managed to force her way in, they’d crop her out of group photos or even photoshop objects over her face.
The message was clear: they didn’t accept her.
Whitney’s status wasn’t high enough to force her way into their circle without humiliating herself, but she kept trying anyway.
“Valeria, you just need to hold on until you have the baby and officially marry into the Hale family. Then my status will rise too!” Whitney said.
Valeria nodded. “I’d like to see who dares to exclude you from their parties then, or crop you out of their photos!”
Whitney’s mouth twitched. Did she really need to be so specific? She had some dignity left.
“But my stomach’s been hurting a lot lately. The doctor said I need bed rest,” Valeria said.
“But I don’t want to stay in bed! Mom, you don’t know–Jasper’s acting completely insane. He totally ignores me and keeps going out to find other women. Now he’s found some girl who looks just like Anastasia, and he takes her to hotels every day! He even brought her back to our apartment once and I caught them. When I confronted him, Jasper told me if I couldn’t handle it, I could get lost!”
Chapter 296
Valeria broke down crying as she spoke.
Whitney felt mortified and quickly pulled her into a private dining room.
“Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner? Please tell me you didn’t lose your temper with him,” Whitney said.
Valeria bit her lip and stayed silent, but her flickering eyes gave her away.
Even without words, Whitney could read between the lines.
“Oh honey, how could you be so foolish? You can’t blow up at him like that!”
Valeria’s eyes welled up with tears. “I couldn’t help it! I really love him.”
Because she loved him so much, she wanted all of him!
Whitney shook her head. She could see that Valeria was in too deep.
In relationships, whoever invested the most usually ended up losing.
Whitney looked at Valeria’s belly. “You’re pregnant, so he can’t sleep with you. It’s normal for him to feel lonely. But getting angry with him was the wrong move–it’ll only push him away.”
Valeria realized that ever since she’d started fighting with Jasper more often, his attitude toward her had definitely gotten
worse.
“Mom, what should I do?” she asked nervously.
“Come with me. I’m taking you shopping for some new lingerie,” Whitney said.
“Lingerie? I don’t need any. I have plenty.”
“Trust me, what you have won’t cut it,” Whitney replied.
When Whitney led her into an adult boutique, Valeria finally understood what she meant.
Her supposedly “sexy” nightgowns looked like children’s pajamas compared to what was here.
“Mom, this… this is basically just a piece of string. How is this even wearable?”
Whitney looked at her like she was an idiot. “You wear it at home, not in public. What are you worried about? The only way to keep a man hooked is to capture his heart completely. Do you want it or not?”
Valeria realized she had a lot to learn compared to Whitney.
The moment Whitney walked in, the sales associate greeted her warmly–clearly she was a regular customer.
“Mom, I had no idea you and Dad were so… adventurous,” Valeria whispered.
Whitney’s smile froze for a moment, something complex flashing in her
eyes.
“Pick the black one. With your fair skin, it’ll look stunning,” she said, changing the subject.

Chapter 296
Valeria figured Whitney knew what she was talking about, so she went with her recommendation.
After they left with their purchase, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows..
“Miss, are you interested in this piece?” the sales associate asked Tamia with a smile.
“Huh?”
Tamia suddenly realized that while following Valeria and Whitney, she’d grabbed a random item off the rack to blend in.
Looking down, she saw she was holding what was basically a few strings masquerading as lingerie.
The garment felt like it was burning her hands. She wanted to drop it immediately.
She gave an awkward laugh. “Um… I…”
