A chill ran down Anastasia’s spine as pieces started clicking into place.
Where exactly did Rainee go to school? They’d been driving for what felt like forever how could a kid walk this distance every day? It didn’t and up And she hadn’t seen a single pedestrian this entire time, just a few scattered cars on the road.
So Rainer had led to her?
But why? They were complete strangers–what could she possibly gain from this?
While Anastasia was still trying to piece things together, she felt a sudden movement behind her..
“Don’t move! keep driving!”
Something cold and sharp pressed against the back of her neck–a knife.
Anastasia’s eyes went wide, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the steering wheel. Her heart was pounding so hard she thought it might burst.
Stay calm. Stay calm.
In the rearview mirror, “Rainee“-who’d been supposedly fast asleep moments before–was now staring at her with cold, calculating eyes and a twisted smile that made Anastasia’s blood run cold.
This was a completely different person from the innocent, scared girl she’d thought she was helping.
God, how did I fall for this?
“You’re smarter than I expected…” Rainee’s voice was still soft, but now it carried a bone–chilling edge. “Too bad you figured it out too late.”
Anastasia’s throat felt like sandpaper. “Those guys back there… you’re all working together?”
How old was this kid? And she was sitting here, cool as ice, holding a knife to her throat? What kind of situation had she walked into?
“Bingo.” Rainee tilted her head, tapping Anastasia’s cheek lightly with the flat of the blade. “Those two idiots couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag. Had to handle this myself.”
It hit Anastasia like a truck–this whole thing was a setup. From the very beginning. They’d staged that entire scene just to lure her in.
Someone had been watching her, waiting for the perfect moment when she’d be alone and vulnerable. Out here in the middle of nowhere, getting rid of her would be a piece of cake.
But who? And why go to all this trouble?
“What do you want? Money?” Anastasia kept her voice as steady as she could. “I can pay you.”
“Money?” Rainee let out a cold laugh. “Someone already paid us. We’re professionals, lady.”
So someone was behind this. Someone wanted her dead.
The knife pressed closer. One wrong move and her throat would be sliced open.
Anastasia knew she was running out of time. She had to do something, anything.
“I’m driving,” she said carefully. “If you hurt me, I’ll lose control of the car. We’ll both die.”
As she spoke, she glanced at the door locks. Maybe if she hit the brakes suddenly, she could create enough chaos to-
“Nice try.” Rainee seemed to read her mind, applying just enough pressure to draw a thin line of blood. “Keep driving straight, or I’ll carve up that pretty face of yours.”
