Seeing Nicole like this, Samuel knew she felt terrible. He said, “Stay with Lucas for a couple of days. Morty will come and take him back in two days. What are you gonna do then?”
“I don’t know. You? You transferred all your properties now?”
Nicole knew Samuel had been quite busy and she had to ask.
Samuel smiled, “Things need to be taken slowly. Don’t worry. But I’m gonna go abroad after a while. I got some things to deal with.”
Nicole nodded.
Now they were in unusual times. It was natural that Samuel needed to go out. Nicole just wanted him to be safe.
“Take care of yourself. If anything happens, call me.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll help you pack up.”
“No need. I’ll be back in two days. It’s not business. It’s kind of personal.”
Nicole froze.
“Personal?”
“Yes. One of my comrades passed away. We used to be very close. I want to see him for the last time.”
Samuel didn’t hide this from her.
They were soldiers and it was normal to sacrifice. But it was still devastating.
They devoted themselves to their nation and people. But for their families, it was cruel. Now Samuel wanted to say goodbye to him.
Nicole couldn’t fully understand his feelings. But she knew he must go.
She turned around to fix his collar. She whispered, “I know it doesn’t help much for me to comfort you. But you have to look after yourself, okay? You’ve got your wife and children here.”
“I know. And you take care of yourself too. It’s completely okay not to get involved in Olivia’s decision. If you’re bored, you should talk with your parents or ask booth to talk with Olivia.”
“You don’t want them to divorce?”
Nicole stared at him and felt kind of sad.
Samuel shook his head, “It’s not up to us. We can only give them some advice. But it’s their call.”
“I get it.”
Nicole nodded but was still a little depressed.
Samuel knew it would take a long time for her to be happy again. But he was glad that Lucas was here to keep her company.
Nicole packed some clothes and food for him and drove him to the airport.
Samuel was heartbroken to see Nicole so reluctant to see him off. If he didn’t get this bad news, he wouldn’t want to leave her either.
Looking from the window on the plane, he could hardly see Nicole’s figure. Samuel forced himself to stop looking for her, which grieved him very much.
After a few hours’ flight, he arrived at a shabby small town.
Samuel took a taxi and went to his comrade’s home, only to see Jacob was here.
Jacob paused a little when he saw Samuel but then he quickly saluted Samuel.
“Mr. Green.”
“Haven’t slept well lately?”
Seeing him so toilworn, Samuel couldn’t help asking.
Jacob took a look at them and said, “The child is too young and doesn’t understand what death means. Maybe he’ll know when he grows up.”
“Even if he grows old enough to understand, he will never be able to feel like this anymore. The only one in great pain and sorrow is the wife.”
Samuel’s words surprised Jacob. He seemed to get the gist of what he said. But he said it so casual and smooth.
“Mr. Green, do you wanna say anyhing to me?”
“Think it over yourself. The child matters but the wife is the one who matters the most. The child will grow up and has his own life. Even if the father is absent, he won’t stop growing because his mother will keep him company. But what about the wife? The soldier’s wife is willing to endure loneliness and sorrow, which can show how much she loves her husband. Once one of them dies, the other person’s life will never be whole again. And when the child becomes an adult and moves out, what will happen to the wife? She will be all alone in their house. Will she still have the courage and hope to live?”
Samuel turned around and left.
Seeing the wife’s empty eyes and the child who didn’t know anything at all, he finally woke up.
They gave birth to the child. But when he grew up, he would have his own life. He was too young to understand his father was gone. The only one who was handling the pain was the wife.
The wife…
Jacob felt his heart was brokenness
And his head was aching.
Was he really wrong?
Jacob went after Samuel and grabbed his arm.
“Mr. Green, tell me, am I really wrong?”
“You should be the one who knows the best. And I found out something that you should know before I came here.”
Samuel stared at Jacob angrily, which made Jacob felt uneasy.

The book is slow....too many words are wasted to explain...need a better translator.......
God I want to read the book but it's freaking annoying, Samuel Green, Nicole Bush, Lucas Bush, Jacob Brown in every line.....I hope this author grows...the book would have been okay but it's affecting my mood...
Does the author have write the full names of the characters all the time...it's annoying...we are reading the book, we know their surnames already.......
What is it with Chinese authors. The characters are slow, he finally opened his mouth, it took him so long just to say two words...the house keeper would have put the person out before he even spoke....is this really how people are over there..the characters are always lost in thought, they might as well live in their heads.....
