Chapter 86
Anna’s POV:
As I walked out of the police station, I transferred the audio file of my conversation with Lucas and sent it to fade. The sky was dimming around me, casting long shadows across the pavement.
My phone buzzed with her response almost immediately.
Il need to think about this. Let me see how I feel in a month.J
I stared at the screen, waiting for more. Another message appeared.
[If my body allows it, I want to see him one more time.]
Then, the final blow: Maybe that will be the last time I ever see him in this lifetime.J
I nearly lost it right there on the sidewalk. My chest tightened as I fought to keep my composure. How was I supposed to watch this tragedy unfold?
Jade was using an “affair” as her cover story when cancer was stealing her future. And I couldn’t tell Lucas the truth.
The sun had completely set by the time I hung up.
Boston’s nightlife was awakening, neon signs flickering to life along the streets. I should head back to Seaside Manor, but the thought of that hollow house made me hesitate.
My mind was a jumble of Jade’s condition and the coral research project.
I texted Emily instead.
Within an hour, I was walking into the most luxurious private room at Crown Club. Emily had already ordered drinks, her concerned eyes tracking me as I slumped into the velvet chair across from her.
“Well, look who finally showed up,” Emily teased, raising her glass. was starting to think you were planning to ghost me completely.”
I managed a weak smile. “Sorry. It’s been… complicated.”
“When is it not complicated with you?” She pushed a cocktail toward me. “Drink. You look like you need it.”
I didn’t argue, Blake was probably busy comforting Claire right now anyway. No point in rushing home to interrupt their little family moment. Tonight, I’d treat myself. Get drunk. Tell Emily some things she needed to know.
“I need your help with something,” I said, reaching into my bag and pulling out an envelope.
Emily’s eyebrows shot up. “What’s this?”
“My resignation letter. I need you to give it to Henry.”
The glass nearly slipped from her fingers. “You’re fucking kidding me
“I’m not,” I said, sliding it across the table. “I’ll finish the coral project first, but after that, I’m done.”

Chapter 86
“Are you out of your goddamn mind?” Emily’s eyes welled up. “EcoMarine is finally stable again! With Blake’s funding, we’re not just surviving–we’re growing! Jade’s already gone, and now you’re leaving too? What the hell am I supposed to do there alone?
I leaned forward, lowering my voice. “I’m going to get control of EcoMarine. I’ll hand it to you for your birthday next month.”
Emily tossed the letter back at me. “What would I do with EcoMarine? I’m just an environmental engineer!”
