Chapter 49
Anna’s POV:
Blake’s arm wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me against him. This was a show of possession- his way of telling them that I was still his wife.
“Let go of me,” I whispered, trying to pull away without causing a scene. The harder I struggled, the tighter his grip became.
“We’re leaving together,” Blake said through gritted teeth, his voice low enough that only I could hear. “This has gone far enough.”
Before I could respond, a figure wedged between us with such force that Blake was pushed back a step, his grip finally broken.
Michael, who just moments ago had been speaking calmly with another officer, now stood between Blake and me, his eyes hardened to stone.
“Take your hands off her, Wright.” Michael’s voice had dropped an octave, carrying a dangerous edge I’d never heard before.
Blake straightened his custom suit jacket, his expression flickering between surprise and
condescension. “This is between me and my wife, Officer.”
Michael’s jaw tightened. “I answered to ‘Officer Garcia‘ a minute ago. Now I’m answering to a
promise.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Blake’s irritation was growing more visible by the second.
Michael took a step closer to Blake, their heights nearly matching, though Blake’s build was slightly more imposing. “I made a promise to Adam Anderson before he died. I’d protect his daughter, no
matter who threatened her.”
Michael reached up and unpinned his badge, placing it deliberately in his pocket. “With this badge, I’m bound by law and procedure. Without it-” his eyes narrowed, “I’m just a man who keeps his promises.”
“Michael, don’t-” I started, but it was too late.
Michael lunged forward, grabbing Blake’s expensive lapels.
Blake shoved me aside, causing me to stumble into a nearby desk. His focus was entirely on Michael now, his cool composure shattered. “You’ve got this all wrong, Garcia. You’re throwing away your career for nothing
Chapter 49
“My father and Mr. Anderson were best friends since high school,” Michael growled. “Your family name doesn’t mean shit to me.”
The first punch came from Blake–a swift right hook that Michael mostly dodged.
They grappled, knocking into chairs and sending papers flying. Officers nearby were frozen in surprise at seeing their normally controlled superior engaged in a brawl.
“Stop it!” I shouted, but neither man paid me any attention..
Then suddenly, Seth jumped into the fray, landing a solid punch to Blake’s kidney.
“Seth, no!” I cried out, but these men had completely lost their minds..
The commotion finally drew attention from the bullpen. Three officers rushed in, pulling the men apart with considerable effort. They continued to strain against their captors, breathing heavily and glaring at each other.
“What the hell is going on here?” demanded one of the senior officers, looking between Michael and the two other men.
Michael wiped blood from his nose, his eyes still locked on Blake. His normal professional demeanor was completely gone.
“Michael,” I said softly, shaking my head slightly when he finally looked at me. “This isn’t worth it.”
I stepped closer to him, lowering my voice. “You’re from a normal family. What chance do you have against the Wrights? You’ve kept your promise to my father, but I can’t let you lose everything because of me.”
The fire in his eyes dimmed, though his posture remained alert. He nodded once, understanding what I was saying.
Blake, meanwhile, was straightening his tie and dabbing at the blood on his lip with a monogrammed handkerchief. “I hope you’ve enjoyed your time as a head detective, Garcia. I doubt it will last much longer.”
“Don’t you dare, I hissed at Blake. He has nothing to do with this.”
“He made it his business, Blake responded coldly.
Before I could defend Michael further, Seth stepped forward, his face twisted with something between anger and hurt.
Anna, what the hell? Seth’s voice cut through the tension. “What’s with you and this cop? Since When do you jump to protect someone else like that? I don’t remember you ever being so concerned

about me.”
I turned to face him, suddenly exhausted by all of this testosterone–fueled posturing. “You’re perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, Seth.”
“And he isn’t?” Seth jerked his thumb toward Michael.
I sighed. “Michael has been helping me gather evidence from inside the department.” I ran a hand through my short hair. “If it weren’t for him, I might not have been able to clear my name so quickly.”
I turned back to Blake, looking for any sign of remorse or doubt about what he had put me through.
But Blake’s face remained impassive. “Don’t be so quick to declare victory, Anna. The truth and the law will have the final say.”
I felt something cold settle in my chest. Of course. Blake would never believe anything against his
precious Claire. In his eyes, I would always be the villain in their story.
During this time, Seth remained silent.
His expression was cold and distant as he stared at me for a long while.
Then his harsh laugh broke the silence. “Well, I get it now.”
He turned to Blake, his smile not reaching his eyes. “Mr. Wright, don’t take this personally. No need
to ruin business over a woman. I’ll buy you a drink sometime.”
Seth reached up again to run his fingers through his hair, only to encounter his new short cut. He
