Divorcing My Husband Over His Stepsister's Secret novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36

Anna’s POV:

I turned to stare at him, my mind struggling to process his words. What? Stop trying to trick me. There’s no way in this world someone else could frame me for something out of nowhere, let alone the police.

I caught a glimpse of him smirking in disdain, as if he thought I was afraid, but he didn’t even turn to glance at me.

We’re ten minutes from the hospital,he said flatly. You have two choices apologize to Claire, or get taken away by the police. Your decision.

My heart raced as I realized he might actually be serious. Blake, I haven’t done anything wrong. I can’t apologize for something I didn’t do.

The evidence says otherwise.

I turned away, not wanting to argue with him any longer. No matter what I said, he wouldn’t believe me anyway. I didn’t do this, and I’m not apologizing for it.

The hospital entrance loomed ahead, its fluorescent lighting harsh against the evening sky. As we pulled up, I saw James standing near the entrance, his expression grim. Two uniformed officers

flanked him.

My stomach dropped. This wasn’t a bluff.

Blake parked and exited without waiting for me. I followed.

Mrs. Wright,James nodded curtly as I approached. I’m here to take Miss Wright’s statement and

will need you to come with us afterward to assist with our investigation.

Investigation of what?I asked.

Tyler Hodges, the man who attacked Miss Wright, has implicated you in a murderforhire plot.

I felt the blood drain from my face. That’s absurd! I would never-

Blake cut me off, ignoring both me and James as he pushed past us and headed straight for the hospital entrance. He didn’t even glance back as he disappeared through the sliding doors, leaving me standing alone with the police.

A wave of helplessness washed over me.

James approached, his voice surprisingly gentle. Mrs. Wright, would you please come with us?

Chapter 36

I found my voice. Can I have ten minutes? I need to speak with Claire.

He hesitated, then nodded. Ten minutes. We’ll wait here.

I pushed open the door to Claire’s private room and found Caroline dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. William sat in a chair by the window, his face lined with concern. Blake stood by Claire’s bed, his hand resting protectively on her shoulder.

Caroline looked up when I entered. Anna, don’t worry. This must be some kind of misunderstanding. William and I absolutely don’t believe you’d do anything illegal like hiring someone to hurt Claire.

Her words, so unexpected and kind, brought tears to my eyes. I realized with a pang that my mother- inlaw showed me more unconditional trust than my husband ever had.

Caroline continued, her voice cracking with emotion. We’ll get to the bottom of this.

William nodded firmly. Blake, why aren’t you handling the situation? Why are police involved in a family matter?

Blake’s expression hardened. The evidence is clear. What am I supposed to do, pretend it doesn’t exist? Go kill that attacker myself?

William’s face flushed with anger. How dare you speak like that!

Blake fell silent, but his cold stare remained fixed on me.

William gestured to Caroline. Help me up, dear. Let’s go speak with the police.
