Anna’s POV:

1 set my phone down on the coffee table, turning to face lake with unnerving calmness.

“How can you just walk in here whenever you want?” I asked,

“You’re my wife. This is your apartment. Of course I can come in His voice was hoarse, almost raspy.

“Shouldn’t you be at Seaside Manor with those gorgeous girls, enjoying a party right now?” I asked, forcing a bitter smile. “I bet there are women wondering where their Mr. Wright has vanished to. Doesn’t seem fair to them, does it?”

Blake’s jaw tightened, a vein pulsing at his temple as he stepped closer. His fingers dug into my shoulders, gripping tightly.

My chest heaved as emotion overtook me. “If you’re man enough, if you really want to protect your precious Claire, go to the hospital! Talk to your dying father with his bad heart! Or beg your stepmother! But don’t come to me!” I was practically shouting now. “Blake, from beginning to end, it’s you and Claire who owe me!”

I pushed him away with all my strength. “Are you satisfied with that answer?”

Something shifted in his expression. He grabbed my hand before I could pull away. “Come with me to the hospital to talk to my father. I can arrange for Claire to leave Boston, but she can’t be kicked out of the Wright family. How would she survive?”

eyes softened slightly. “Anna, she’s your sister–in–law too. Could you really stand by and watch her lose her dance career and everything else?”

Tears filled my eyes instantly. I lowered my head as one escaped, then quickly wiped it away as if it had never existed. His words felt like a fist crushing my heart, making it impossible to breathe.

Blake had never fought for me like this. But for Claire? He was willing to confront his dying father in the middle of the

night.

“You ungrateful son! Are you trying to kill me?” William’s voice, though not loud, carried the full weight of his authority as the water glass he’d thrown shattered on the hospital floor.

Caroline and Claire knelt outside the hospital room. Blake and stood frozen in the hallway.

“He made a mistake, Caroline pleaded. “Claire’s been spoiled since childhood. I’ll send her to Paris-”
