Chapter 548
Sanford asked, “Did Yorick really not know about me at all?”
Werner blurted out, “How could he possibly know?” He cleared his throat and explained, “What I mean is, your mother kept her pregnancy a secret. She took you to Shaville back then. Yorick died early, so there’s no way he could have known.”
Sanford didn’t press further. He said, “If he didn’t know, then so be it. Anyway, I grew up fatherless been used to it all these years.”
Werner pursed his lips tightly. He rested his hand on his knee and stayed silent, but guilt was clear in his eyes.
After the meal, Werner and Sanford returned to the ward together.
Werner gazed at Sanford’s profile, which so closely resembled his own. He took out the bank card again and urged, “Take this card, Sanford. If you ever need anything, just come to me.”
Sanford scoffed, “I don’t need you, a Lynn family member, putting on this phony act here.”
Werner said, “In my heart, you’ll always be a Lynn.”
Sanford froze for a moment.
Werner grasped Sanford’s hand, pressing the bank card into his palm with a meaningful look. He said, “Good boy, take good care of your mother. It would be wonderful if she recovers. You and your mom, take care of yourselves, alright?”
After that, he left with a reluctant and resolved expression.
Sanford watched Werner’s retreating figure until it vanished from sight, growing even more puzzled.
Back in the ward, the moment Sanford returned, Liora grabbed his arm anxiously and asked, “What did Werner say to you?”
Seeing Liora’s anxious expression, Sanford filled her in on the details of the bank card.
Liora was seized by a coughing fit. Then she said, “Sanford, don’t you dare take his money? Give it back to him right now.”
Sanford gently patted Liora’s shoulder and said, “Mom, calm down. It was Werner who insisted on giving it to me.”
Liora insisted, “Give it back. We have nothing to do with him.” Her words were a dead giveaway, practically screaming that she had something to hide.
Sanford grew suspicious and turned to Liora. “Mom, what’s really going on between you and Werner?” he asked.
Liora’s body stiffened.
Sensing her evasiveness and resistance, Sanford pressed urgently, “Mom, is there something going on between you two? Every time he looks at me, I feel like there’s something different in his eyes. What’s going on?”
Liora fell silent, clearly unwilling to answer.
Sanford felt a wave of disappointment wash over him when she stayed silent. He said, “So you’re still not going to tell me anything?
anymore.”
Liora finally said, “We were classmates.”
Sanford asked, “What? Who?”
Liora said, “The man who gave you that bank card. I first met Yorick at Werner’s birthday party. I fell for Yorick at first sight.”
Sanford sneered, “So, he was your matchmaker? If it weren’t for Werner, you wouldn’t have fallen for the wrong man.”
