“Keep an eye on him, Derek was saying as I gently pushed open the door. I want to know everywhere he goes, everyone he talks to.”

I hesitated in the doorway, uncertain whether I should interrupt. Derek glanced up, acknowledging my presence with a brief nod but continuing his conversation.

“If he makes another move, kill him,” he continued, his tone leaving no room for argument. I don’t have time to waste on this.”

The coldness in his voice sent a chill down my spine. This was the Pack Alpha speaking, not the man I’d come to know over these weeks. It was a stark reminder that Derek wasn’t just my boss but a powerful Alpha wolf responsible for protecting his pack at any cost,

Distracted by his words, I failed to notice a folder on the floor. My foot caught it, causing me to stumble forward. The coffee cup in my hand tilted, sending hot liquid directly onto Derek’s partially unbuttoned white shirt.

“I’m so sorry!” I gasped, quickly setting down the cup and grabbing tissues from his desk. “I didn’t see that folder-”

“I’ll call you back,” Derek said curtly into the phone before hanging up.

I hurried to his side, my hands trembling with embarrassment as I tried to blot the dark stain spreading across his chest. The top few buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing a small patch of skin that was rapidly turning red from the hot liquid.

“It’s fine,” Derek said, his voice surprisingly calm considering the circumstances.

“No, it’s not fine,” I insisted, focusing on the coffee stain to avoid meeting his eyes. “Your shirt is ruined, and-” I stopped as I noticed the angry red mark forming on his exposed skin. “You’re

burned.”

Without thinking, I leaned closer, gently blowing on the reddened area to cool the burn. It was something my mother had done for me countless times as a child–a natural, instinctive response to seeing someone in pain.

It was only when I felt Derek go completely still that I realized the intimacy of what I was doing. I was just inches from his chest, my breath skating across his skin. I could smell his scent more clearly than ever before–cedar and leather with undertones of wilderness and distinctly Alpha.

I slowly lifted my gaze to find Derek watching me, his eyes darkened from their usual gray to a more intense shade. My heart began to race, blood pounding in my ears as our gazes locked. My wolf squirmed eagerly inside me, circling excitedly beneath my skin.

The door opened to reveal Beta Tom. He paused in the doorway, his gaze moving between Derek and me, clearly sensing something off about the atmosphere in the room.

“Am I early, Alpha?” he asked cautiously.

Derek shook his head. “No, you’re right on time.”

Tom’s gaze lingered on me for a moment, his nostrils flaring slightly as if catching our mingled

scents. “If I’m interrupting, I can come back later.”

“You’re not interrupting anything,” Derek answered firmly, adjusting his coffee–stained shirt. “Erin was just leaving.”

I nodded, still too flustered to speak, and moved toward the door. However, before I could leave,

Derek called my name.

“Erin.” His voice was slightly softer. “You’ll be joining us for the meeting.”

I turned, surprised by the announcement. “Me?”
