Chapter 18

Professo quickly stepped to the computer, attempting to shut down the presentation, but the images had been seen, the words read.

This behavior is absolutely unacceptable,” he announced, his voice stern. Not only does it demonstrate a complete lack of respect for this competition, but it shows a blatant disregard for our traditions and hierarchy.”

I finally managed to find my voice. “Professor, please, I didn’t do this. Someone must have—”

“Enough!” he cut me ofT. “I don’t know what you hoped to accomplish with this display, but attempting to embarrass the Alpha and his family in such a public manner is beyond inappropriate. It reflects poorly not just on you, but on the entire academy.”

I felt tears burning behind my eyes but refused to let them fall. I would not give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry.

From the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Lily, watching the spectacle with barely concealed delight.

My wolf rose to the surface, a growl building in my chest. 1 could feel my canines lengthening slightly, my vision sharpening as my wolfs senses began to take over. The urge to shift, to leap across the auditorium and tear into both of them, was almost overwhelming.

“Miss Blackwood, please leave the stage immediately.” Professor ordered, apparently noticing the dangerous shift in my demeanor.

I gripped the sides of the podium so hard my knuckles turned white, forcing my wolf back down with every ounce of control I possessed.

I’d spent six months trying to rebuild my life after the Soul Bond Incident. Six months of keeping my head down, focusing on my studies, doing everything possible to avoid drawing attention to myself. And in less than five minutes, Lily had destroyed it all.

The worst part was that Derek had witnessed the whole thing. Whatever slim chance I might have had of him seeing me as something more than an inconvenient complication was now completely obliterated.

Foutsteps sounded behind me, and I turned to see Amy and jack rushing out of the auditorium?,

“Don’t,” I wamed, backing away. My wolf was still too close to the surface, too dangerous. “I need to be alone right now.”

But that wasn’t your fault! We know you didn’t do that,” Jack insisted. “We should go back in and tell everyone

“And who would believe us?” I laughed bitterly “Look, I appreciate it, but I justI need some

Without waiting for their response, I turned and ran down the hallway, my vision blurring with tears I refused to shed.

1 had dreamed of the day Derek might see me as something more than an inconvenient complication, maybe even recognize something of value in ma

Instead, bed watched as I was educed to a desperate, pathetic omega who couldn’t accept her place in the hierarchy. The thought made my chest ache with

pain so raw it felt physical,
