Chapter 2
I quickly grabbed my phone, explaining casually:
“Nothing serious. My ID expired, so I’m making an appointment to renew it. Don’t you have training today?
Go ahead with your work.”
He didn’t think much of it, just pulled me into his arms and nuzzled against me.
“Honey, are you planning a surprise for me?”
I froze for a moment.
He playfully tapped my nose.
“I saw your pregnancy test results! My parents have been wanting a grandchild for five years. They’ll be
overjoyed! It’s almost the anniversary of your parents‘ passing. Let’s visit their graves together, tell them
about the pregnancy, okay? We should also have a family dinner. Michael hasn’t been home in ages.”
I smiled without saying anything.
He excitedly spun me around in his arms.
For five years, he’d tried to improve my relationship with Michael. I once thought this was evidence of his love for me. Now I realized it was all calculation. He only used family gatherings as an excuse to see Erin
more often.
It was time to end this five–year charade.
As soon as he left, I also departed.
I went to a law firm to print out divorce papers and canceled all my identification documents.
Nathan had taken the case files, so going to the police now would be futile. Leaving was my only option.
When I arrived at Nathan’s precinct with the divorce papers, I overheard his colleagues talking.
“Isn’t that Detective Thompson’s wife? She looks familiar… Oh right! The Blake family massacre five years
ago!”
“Want to get punished by the Lieutenant? Stop talking nonsense. He’s already said she’s not the killer.

Drop it before he hears you and loses his temper again. He’s argued with the captain enough times, over this case in the past few years.”
“Look at her outfit–must be worth over a hundred grand. Just flew back from overseas, I heard. With that kind of money, she probably wouldn’t need to kill anyone. And have you seen how the Lieutenant looks at her? Like he can’t take his eyes off her. If she were the killer, he’d have arrested her immediately.”
My nails dug into my palms. I stood outside his office door, hearing familiar voices inside.
“How has he treated you these past few years?” Nathan asked.
“You know your brother better than anyone. When he heard I was coming back, he bought me a private jet. Wouldn’t listen when I told him not to. Even after five years of marriage, he still acts like a child…”
Nathan’s voice was bitter and suppressed. “That’s good. I can rest easy then.”
“Nathan, I still need to thank you for what happened back then. Otherwise, I might be in prison now. I should skip tomorrow’s family dinner. I don’t want to upset Sophie. Every time she sees me, she’s
reminded of her parents. I’m afraid she’ll fight with you again…”
Erin was always like this. Taking advantage, then turning around to play the victim with her passive–aggressive comments.
When Nathan was investigating the case, I’d secretly looked at the records. I knew she was the only
suspect.
At the wedding, I publicly accused her of murdering my parents and wanted her taken to the police
station.
But everyone took her side, accusing me of being unreasonable.
Only Nathan defended me. He became my only salvation in life. But now, he was also the one pushing me
into the abyss.
In the office, Nathan forced a bitter smile and took a ceramic figurine from his drawer. “I made this myself. It’s not as valuable as something from a store, but it’s heartfelt. I heard you’re pregnant too.
Consider it a gift for the baby.”
Erin accepted it with a smile, playfully sticking out her tongue.
My trembling hands caused the door to make a noise when Nathan saw me standing outside and immediately tensed up. “Sophie? Why are you here? Don’t misunderstand. Erin just got back and came to see me. We’re just chatting, discussing tomorrow’s family dinner.”
