When Gwendolyn asked about her face, the young woman cupped her bandaged cheek.
“Hello, Ms. Harris. My name is Gina Worrell. Two days ago, I fell down the stairs and injured my left cheek. But don’t you worry, Ms. Harris. I promise it won’t affect my working hours. Besides, I heal fast.”
The moment she spoke, a hoarse voice that was unpleasant to hear and ear-piercing sounded.
Holding Zendaya in her arms, Gwendolyn gently patted the baby and quickly retracted her gaze. “You’re not suitable for the job. Please leave.”
Nico tried to take Gina away.
However, Gina refused to budge and instead asked bitterly, “Ms. Harris, you refuse to hire me even before assessing my job qualifications. Is it because of my face? It turns out you judge people by their looks too, Ms. Harris.”
Slightly furrowing her brows, Gwendolyn looked up and met Gina’s eyes again.
Noticing Gwendolyn’s anger, Nico hurriedly dragged Gina away. “What are you talking about? I’ve never seen a job candidate as rude as you. How could you accuse her of judging you by your looks when she didn’t give you the job? Are you guilt-tripping her now?”
Nico’s forceful motions caused Gina to take two steps toward the door.
At long last, Gwendolyn, who lay in bed, spoke. “There are four reasons why I refuse to hire you. One, your voice is so unpleasant to hear and would easily scare the babies. Two, from the way you look at me, you don’t seem humble. Three, there is no affection in that sharp gaze of yours. Lastly, and the most important point, is that there’s something about you that just grates on me. I don’t like you, so I don’t have to assess your qualifications.”
Her tone was calm and blunt as if she was talking about the weather.
Nico then chimed in, “Did you hear that? Are you satisfied yet? Now, hurry up and leave.”
Gina had no choice but to turn and leave. When she reached the door, she suddenly looked back and asked with a smirk, “Ms. Harris, are you sure you can be at ease?”
Before Nico could yell at her, she went downstairs.
Nico stood frozen to his spot, stunned for a second, before hurriedly apologizing to Gwendolyn, “Gwendolyn, I’m sorry. I promise I will be more careful when looking for a nanny from now on. I won’t bring any weirdos here again.”
Gwendolyn nodded with a hum and continued coaxing Zendaya, who was in her arms.
What Gina said before she left suddenly replayed in Gwendolyn’s mind non-stop.
That last look in Gina’s eyes earlier…
Something suddenly dawned on her and made her look at Nico sternly. “Hurry up and go after her! Bring her back at all costs!”
“All right, Gwendolyn.”
Nico put on a solemn expression, turned around, and dashed out of the room.
An uneasy feeling suddenly rose in Gwendolyn’s heart. She quickly called Cedrick, who was working diligently in his study.
“Yes, Darling?”
“Where is Benny?”
After picking up the call, Cedrick glanced at the baby sound asleep in his arms. “He’s here with me. What’s wrong?”
Gwendolyn heaved a sigh of relief. “Nothing. Get back to what you’re doing.”
After she hung up, she gazed out the window.
I hope I was overthinking.
Fifteen minutes later, Nico returned.
“Gwendolyn, I couldn’t find her. She was so fast and disappeared the moment she exited the house. I checked some of the surveillance footage but didn’t see her anywhere. I bet she used the blind spots to escape.”
The atmosphere in the room turned cold.
Gwendolyn contemplated for a moment.
She even knew where the blind spots were. Did she already know, or was it simply a coincidence?
“Which nanny service agency did you go to? Check her performance reports and make sure you look carefully. We must find her. I must question her myself.”
“Sure. Don’t worry, Gwendolyn.”
The babies slept in the middle of the big bed at night while Gwendolyn and Cedrick were on each side, separated from each other.
From time to time, Cedrick would pat the babies and raise his head to glance at Gwendolyn lying on the other side of the bed. She was staring at Zendaya absent-mindedly, seemingly lost in thoughts.
Those kids are so annoying!
Suppressing his inner rage, he muttered softly, “We should hurry up and get a nanny so I can be free!”
Gwendolyn giggled. “Ceddy, it’s time to change their diapers.”
The next day, Nico started investigating Gina’s identity while William looked for another nanny.
After yesterday’s incident, Gwendolyn added special conditions.
The nanny had to be someone at least middle-aged, experienced in babysitting, and have an honest and humble appearance.
That afternoon, it was not Nico or William who stepped into Harrick Villa; it was an executive of Harris Group—Jackson Jallard.
He was someone who cared much about the company. During many conferences, he was always the first to agree with Gwendolyn’s decision.
Thus, Gwendolyn had a good impression of him.
When Jackson entered the bedroom, Gwendolyn was holding Zendaya in her arms while leaning against the headboard.
Whenever Zendaya was in her arms, the baby didn’t cry or whine and was obedient and quiet.
Jackson, who stood far from her at the door, flashed a faint smile and exclaimed, “Congratulations, Ms. Harris! You sure are blessed to give birth to twins.”
After exchanging formalities, Gwendolyn got straight to the point. “Thank you, Jackson. What made you come all the way here today?”
Jackson didn’t beat around the bush and told her the purpose of his visit right away. “It’s about the right of inheritance of Harris Group. May I know what you have in mind regarding this, Ms. Harris?”
Gwendolyn replied, “What do you mean?”
“When Mr. Marcus was still alive, he said the inheritance would be passed down to girls in the family. You gave birth to twins. Aren’t you going to make the necessary arrangements for your daughter?”
Gwendolyn understood what he meant. “Are you here to ask me to decide on a future successor upfront? Zendy is still so young. Isn’t it too soon to hand her the right of inheritance of Harris Group?”
A smile hung on Jackson’s face. “Ms. Harris, I am asking you to do this now because you will have to register their names in the household registry soon. If you have thought about letting your daughter inherit Harris Group, then she can’t be a Jenson.”
