As Helen approached the venue, she spotted a news crew and quickly ducked in through a side entrance to avoid them.
When the drawing of lots began, reporters still hadn't seen her, prompting trending topics like "Helen Missing from Finals" and "Helen Suspected of Withdrawing". These discussions briefly eclipsed the calligraphy competition, ranking in the top three trends.
Inside, contestants drew lots in the order they arrived to determine their performance sequence.
As the star of the event, Sadie drew the most attention. After drawing their numbers, the other participants eagerly gathered around her.
"Sadie, what number did you get?"
"I hope it's not before mine!"
"I'm number 13—how about you, Sadie?"
With a bright smile, Sadie held up her lottery ball. "Sorry, I'm number 12!" she said, feigning disappointment.
"What?" The young man turned pale. "Going right after you means I'll get crushed in scores!"
The judges had already seen Sadie's work, so if he performed right after her, they might barely notice him.
With the competition being broadcast live, the young man dreaded the thought of embarrassing himself on national television.
Realizing this, he took a deep breath and returned to the drawing station. "I'm withdrawing from the competition!" he announced, placing his number ball down.
Following the guidelines, the staff collected his materials, and he stepped out of the venue.
The other contestants behind Sadie exchanged frustrated looks, caught in a dilemma. Leaving would make them seem cowardly, while staying would cast them as mere supporting acts. It was a tough choice.
"Are you sure?" she asked, a knowing look in her eyes. Despite her smile, there was a mischievous spark in her gaze.
A chill ran down Sadie's spine, but with no way to back out, she forced herself to say, "Yes, it would be fairer to the other contestants if I performed later."
Her words immediately drew admiring looks from the participants who would benefit from her decision.
"No wonder she's Glendale's top socialite—who can compete with that grace?"
"Sadie is so thoughtful! I was just worrying about how embarrassing it would be to set a record for the lowest score. Now that it's settled, I don't have to stress anymore!"
This was exactly the response Sadie had been hoping for.
