After saying goodbye to Tommy and Bentley, Helen got into the car.
As they pulled away, Chandler's voice gently broke the silence. "Are you and Ashley old friends?"
"Not exactly," Helen replied casually. "Do you remember when I was mobbed at the mall because of the food poisoning incident? She helped me get away."
"I see," Chandler said with a thoughtful nod. "Did you paint 'Peony Fantasia' while she was watching?"
"How did you know?" Helen blurted out. Despite her initial shock, she soon realized that it was only natural for someone as sharp as Chandler to have figured it out.
With a nod, Helen affirmed, "Yes, I did."
This time, however, Chandler was less surprised than when he had uncovered Helen's other identities. Instead, he approached the situation with a more analytical attitude. "In that case, Ashley must have figured out that you're Seraphina."
"I told her I'm in the business of selling fake paintings. That should be enough to throw her off," Helen reassured him, assuming her cover story would be effective.
Chandler shook his head, his gaze sharpening as he stared ahead. "You seem to have missed what she said before leaving the car. She's already certain of your identity."
"It doesn't matter," Helen replied, brushing it off. "There's not much to hide anyway."
Chandler kept silent, deciding not to pursue the conversation further. Internally, though, he had already begun to have doubts about Ashley.
If Ashley were truly honest, she would have openly revealed Helen's identity as Seraphina. Instead, she spoke in half-truths, creating the impression that she was doing Helen a favor while masking her own motives.
She came across as cunning, with her behavior hinting at a more intricate plan.
…
Once Ashley had entered the mall and ensured she was out of sight, she pulled out her phone and made a call.
"I've located Seraphina. You won't believe it—she's actually a young woman."
After hanging up, Ashley noticed a follow request from Bentley on Instagram.
Mason chuckled bewilderedly, his mouth twitching awkwardly as he fumbled to find the right words.
Had the hints Sadie gave been nothing more than a figment of his imagination?
Still, he couldn't dismiss the warmth and intimacy he felt in her words—surely that couldn't have been a mere illusion, could it?
Despite his initial shock, Mason soon grasped the situation. Sadie was trying to distance herself, acting as though nothing had ever happened between them.
"I know a breakup can be tough," Sadie said sympathetically. "But instead of making a hasty confession, it's better to take some time to reflect. I understand where you're coming from, so I'll act like today never happened. I'll head back to my dorm now."
With that, she brushed past him and walked toward the dormitory.
"Wait," Mason said, grabbing her arm. "I need the badge back."
Sadie pulled away, her face hardening. "What badge? Didn't you give it to me as a gift? Are you seriously going to be so petty as to ask for it back?"
