Voices filled with agony and pain filled Lyra’s mind. Even after all these years, she recognised them like she had heard them yesterday.
The memories from when her pack was afflicted by the mysterious disease played in her brain like a reel, reminding her of the worst parts of the ordeal. Parents had been forced to watch their children suffer and vice versa, with no one being able to help the other.
People had died in the arms of their loved ones, all hope gone after it became clear that there was nothing anyone could do to stop the ravenous disease from claiming lives. At some point, it had become apparent that the Blue Night Pack had been targeted by witches.
The images in her mind moved on to Devon and Allison. She heard the insults he threw her way after finding out she was wolfless, and she felt the hits he landed on her every time he beat her. Images of the two in bed together mocking her flashed through her mind, reminding her of memories she had forcibly hidden in the dark recesses of her mind.
And then they moved on to Julian. His cruelty, his coldness, and all the ways he humiliated her. A ball of anger ballooned in her stomach before spreading through her entire body.
She had to make them pay. All of them. Everyone who had made her life miserable deserved to die. Everyone who had mocked her, laughed at her, put her down. Everybody who had made her feel that she did not belong. Only by getting rid of them could she be truly free.
When she saw Julian in front of her, she knew he had to die. He would be the first to pay for everything. Before she could put her thoughts to action, however, her mind descended into darkness and it all went blank.
When she opened her eyes again, she found herself looking up at Julian’s face. His brows were knitted together in confusion as he held her in his arms. “Lyra?” he called, his voice dotted with worry. “Can you hear me?”
Lyra blinked. What had happened? Why was Julian here? The last thing she remembered was being in the rogue’s den facing the corrupted wolves. She had gotten rid of them. And then…?
“Lyra, look at me,” Julian said.
She refocused her eyes to see his face clearly. As she looked at him, she felt her scattered thoughts settling down. She noticed their surroundings. They were in the forest.
“You shifted,” Rae reminded her, her voice softer than ever. “But you lost your mind right after getting rid of the tainted wolves.”
“What do you mean I lost my mind?” Lyra asked, panicking. Had the wolves infected her while she was fighting with them?
“I could not reach you, and you were out of control,” Rae told her. “But you are okay now. I think it might have been an effect of you coming into contact with their bodily fluids. They did not bite you, so I don’t think it’ll happen again.”
That did not settle Lyra’s worry. What if she lost consciousness again? Her wolf was very powerful. If she had come across some werewolves in that state, she would have massacred them without a second thought. She could not rest easy without knowing for sure that something like that would not happen again.
“How can I counter the effects?” she asked Rae. “Is there an antidote?”
There was a pause from Rae’s side.
“Rae?” Lyra prompted.
“Apparently you have to complete your bond with marking for you to be safe,” Rae said. “You should cooperate with Julian.”
Lyra blinked. What nonsense was that? She refocused on Julian.
