After his run-in with Lyra, Julian met with Thea in his office. Thea wanted to know about the details concerning the engagement party. After Julian’s announcement at the banquet, everyone was waiting for the day of the official engagement between him and Crystal.
Thea wanted to get a heads up so she could start preparing as early as possible, wanting to make sure that the ceremony was up to standard. But Julian did not seem all that concerned about it.
“Forget about it for now,” he told her, half of his brain still stuck on the conversation–if one could call it that–he just had with Lyra. “We might never get to that part.”
That’s what he hoped. If he could find the information he wanted as quickly as possible, there would be no formal engagement.
“Oh, alright,” Thea said. She did not have to inquire any further. Right away, she could tell that Julian must have an ulterior motive for making the announcement about Crystal becoming the future queen. She had lived long enough in the palace to know when not to pry.
But while she could not ask questions about his plans regarding his intentions with Crystal Black, she could definitely ask about Lyra.
Tongues had been wagging ever since Julian stopped his mother from allowing Lyra to leave the palace. It was not usual that the king would be so interested in the fate of an inconsequential slave. Thea could not stop wondering what kind of interest Julian had in Lyra.
“Lyra moved from the Omega’s dormitory and started attending the Academy today,” she informed him, looking for a way to casually broach the subject.
Julian grunted and shuffled through a sheaf of papers in front of him. “And?” he asked, feigning disinterest.
Thea hesitated for a moment before saying, “What do you think about her?”
Julian looked up from the papers to her. “What do I think of her?” he asked incredulously.
In his mind, he was wondering whether he had slipped up. Had Thea noticed his special attention to Lyra? Why else would she ask about his opinion of some slave? It’s not like Lyra was his personal maid or something.
“You brought her to the palace,” Thea pointed out. “At first, I thought she would not fit in, but she has proven me wrong. She works well and does not cause any trouble.”
Julian stared at Thea as if he was seeing an alien. Was this not the same person who had once rambled on, complaining about Lyra and asking him to get rid of her? “I thought you did not like her.”
“At first, I didn’t,” she confessed. “I was a little biased and how I treated her might have caused her to make a few mistakes. But after a while, I realised she isn’t all that bad.”
Julian snickered. “I thought you were smart. But it turns out that you have fallen for her act too. She is quite the actress, trust me.”
“So you don’t like her,” Thea noted.
“What’s there to like?” Julian snapped.
“Why didn’t you let her leave the palace, then?”
Julian clasped his hands on top of his desk and glared at her. “Do you have something you want to say?”
“I’m just saying, I don’t know what she did to deserve such harsh judgement from you,” Thea said. “Maybe you are biased against her because she is an Omega.”
“Are you saying that I’m biased against Omegas?” Julian demanded.
“Would you choose one as your queen?” Thea returned.
Julian clenched his jaw. He couldn’t tell whether she knew something or not.
