After meeting Lyra for the first time, Alpha Zero could not stop thinking about her. He had felt attracted to her from the first time he laid his eyes on her, and then after their interaction, his attraction grew even stronger.
Try as he might, he could not remove the image of her face with her beautiful ocean blue eyes from his mind.
From the moment he had seen her, he had wanted to protect her and hurt anyone who caused her any harm.
It was true that he had a penchant for saving and protecting the weak, but this time, it was different. Normally, he didn’t spend hours thinking about the ones he saved days after the fact. He was happy to help, and that was it. But when it came to Lyra…it was something different.
“She is not your mate,” his wolf Nolan had reminded him. “Forget about her.”
“It doesn’t matter,” Zero had told him.
He had never been attracted to any shewolf the way he was to her. Bond or not, he was certain he wanted to know her more. Beyond that, he was ready to devote himself to her. He wanted her to stay with him, to accept him.
But then Julian revealed that she was his mate. It had forced Zero to suppress his feelings, even though it left him feeling desolate. Julian had waited for his mate for so long, and Zero was happy for him. It was just too unfortunate that it had to be Lyra.
Zero hoped that Julian would treat her well. That would make it easier for Zero to get over his feelings. Because if Julian did not take good care of her, it would only make Zero want to take care of her and protect her more.
Julian might be her mate, and Zero was willing to step back and not get in the way, but if Lyra was being wronged, he could not just stand by and watch.
Zero was trying not to think about Lyra a lot, but he often found his mind wandering to her. She was the first thing he thought about when he woke up, the last thing on his mind when he went to bed. It was not making it easier for him to forget her and move on.
Two days after he had saved her from the three Omegas, he got up at the crack of dawn for his morning run. Keeping busy and active was one way to keep his mind preoccupied, but lately it hadn’t been working so well.
He kept thinking back to Lyra’s injuries and wondering whether she had recovered. He did not like that she was forced to work even when she was injured. What if her injuries had gotten worse? She was just an Omega, so her healing abilities couldn’t be so good. If she couldn’t take enough rest, wouldn’t her injuries just get worse?
While on his run, his route took him near the Omega dormitory and he could not resist the urge to go over. Maybe he could hang around until everybody woke up and got a glimpse of Lyra. Just for reassurance. If he saw that she was doing well, he would be able to go on with the rest of his day without worrying.
Turned out that he did not have to wait. Just as the dormitory came into view, he noticed a figure sitting outside the door. He recognised her right away in the moonlight and rushed to her. Before he could get to her, her body toppled to the ground.
“Lyra!” he called when he got there, kneeling down to reach for her. But there was no response. He looked around, wondering what she was doing out there at that hour. The door to the dorm was shut. How long had she been outside?
He gathered her in his arms and got to his feet. That’s when he got a whiff of a familiar scent. His eyes went over the robe she was wearing. Julian’s. Why was she stranded outside in the middle of the night wearing his cousin’s clothes?
