The Lady Nun Seeks Justice (Eliza Stonor) novel Chapter 640

640.Chapter 640

He even told his wife and sister in law? Everyone in Hasen City knows those two are a piece of work, Gabriel thought Cora his sister–in–law couldn’t keep her mouth shut Whatever she heard today, every woman in the city would know by

tomorrow

And her temper–calling it volatile was an understatement She didn’t just argue with the women in the courtyard, she had gone off on half the old officials in public She had offended many people, yet no one dared to cross her

After her husband’s death, she had raised his only younger brother, Julius, as her own Under the command of Prince Regent, he rose quickly through military ranks, becoming a second rank General in his early forties.

Later, he got married, and his wife was no less formidable. A junior general from the Black Flag, she had seen real battles and taken lives on the field.

After returning to Hasen City, the two women joined forces. One had the words, and the other had the fists. Together, they became a fearsome duo, making the Wright family untouchable.

The old civil officials who had been at the receiving end of their wrath would always refer to them as “A disgrace to society!” Although Gabriel had never been chewed out by them, he had no desire to get involved with such shrews.

Suppressing his anger, he rebuked, “Julius, watch your words! In the presence of His Majesty, this is the royal court, not some street comer for gossip and hearsay, and certainly not your own home.”

As the tension reached its peak, Nolan gave Julius a subtle glance.

Julius picked up on it immediately. He chuckled and said, “Forgive me, Your Majesty. If not for the Duke’s kind reminder, I’d have forgotten we’re still in court. What a fool I am. Lord Mowbay, if there’s anything you wish to discuss, let’s save it for later, shall we?”

“Later? More like never again,‘ Gabriel thought, his face twitching with fury as he turned away, unwilling to look at him for another second.

Magnus stifled a laugh and said, “It’s all good. What the Holy Lady asks isn’t of great consequence, but it isn’t insignificant either. I intended to bring it before the court for discussion anyway. But since we’re on the topic, rather than having me relay it poorly, why not let the Holy Lady speak for herself?”

James stepped forward and announced loudly, “By His Majesty’s command, summon the Holy Lady of Walden to court!”

His voice echoed beyond the grand hall, reaching the ears of those waiting outside.

The palace gates slowly opened, and a slender figure ascended the steps with graceful poise. The ministers turned, eyes widening as they collectively froze.

Eliza stepped forward with the elegance of a swan gliding across the water, unhurried and dignified. She wore a luxurious silk gown that was as pure and white as snow. The embroidery was so intricate that it seemed like the work of angels. She exuded regal grace, a presence that stood apart from the ordinary.

Golden sunlight streamed through the high windows, bathing her gown in its soft glow. The gown sparkled as though kissed by sunlight, like golden butterflies dancing upon the fabric–light as air, ethereal as morning fog. Her beauty was almost otherworldly.

A hint of rouge brightened her cheeks, like the first light of dawn on snow, adding a lively contrast to her otherwise serene appearance. Her eyes sparkled like moonlight on still water, as if the world had never left its mark on them.

The Holy Lady. She was, indeed, a Holy Lady in every sense, many ministers thought to themselves.

“I object,” someone declared.

As expected, he opposed it. The ministers all turned to look but something was off. It wasn’t Gabriel speaking, but Godfrey

The ministers enjoying the spectacle raised their brows in disbelief, thinking. ‘Godfrey… This is their family matter. Why are you sticking your nose in it? You might as well declare yourself one of the Duke’s men.‘

Everyone knew Gabriel was the head of the civil officials, but no one ever laid it so bare. That was practically asking for trouble. After all, forming factions for personal gain was a capital offense.

As expected Magnus’s gaze landed on Godfrey. “Godfrey, you disagree, Magnus said coolly. “Do you have reason to object?”

Sweat beaded on Godfrey’s brow as he caught the edge in Magnus’s voice. Still, he couldn’t back down. Steeling himself, he stepped forward, bowed, and said firmly. “Your Majesty, I believe the Holy Lady’s request to change her last name is highly inappropriate.

“According to our rites and customs, last names are sacred–they define lineage and ancestral law. The order of bloodlines ensures the order of the state. The Book of Rites teaches that the way of humanity begins with familial affection; from that affection comes reverence for ancestors, and from reverence, respect for one’s clan.

“The last name is the root of that reverence. As one with a unique and honored position, the Holy Lady ought to uphold the law and set an example for the people. Changing her last name on a personal whim not only breaks ancestral tradition but may also disrupt social order. Therefore, I strongly believe that it must not be allowed.”
