At that moment, ten–year–old Dylan was kneeling in the courtyard, punished by his father for getting into a fight with other kids at the acadenty
Six–year–old Eliza came running in and immediately saw him like this. She said, “Dylan! Dylan! Father said there will be lots of stars tonight. Let’s go outside and watch them together!
“Dylan, what happened? Why are you on the ground? Get up! The ground’s cold! Steward said you’ll get sick if you stay here
too long.”
Eliza shuffled closer to her brother, clinging to his arm and trying to pull him up
“Leave me alone! I’m staying right here! Dylan sakl
He thought, ‘Fine, let Father punish me! But once this is over, I’d make those two loudmouths pay for their insults!
‘How dare they call me a motherless child? I’d make sure they regretted it
Still fuming over his punishment, Dylan lost his temper and pushed Eliza away without thinking.
Unfortunately, he used too much force, and Elza stumbled and fell.
Her little head hit the ground with a loud “thud,” shocking everyone.
Both Dylan and the maid who had been following Eliza turned pale, their faces drained of color.
Dylan immediately forgot about his punishment and scrambled to Eliza’s side, his hands trembling as he helped her up Eliza, are you okay? Wake up! Does your head hurt? Are you dizzy?
“What are you standing there for? Go get a doctor for her, now!
Dylan panicked the moment he saw his little sister close her eyes and immediately wanted to call for a doctor.
Before he could act, Eliza’s soft voice rang out, “Don’t call a doctor.”
Defeated, he asked, “Alright, but why don’t you want me to call a doctor? Don’t tell me it doesn’t hurt, I’m not that gullible.” Eliza giggled mischievously. “Because I know why you’re on the ground. It’s because Father punished you, isn’t it?”
Clinging to his arm, Eliza pouted and said, “Because if the doctor comes, Father will find out. Then he’ll scold you again, maybe even punish you more, I don’t want that, Dylan. I don’t want you to get in trouble. So, can we not call the doctor, please?
“And besides, my head’s as tough as a rock! It doesn’t hurt at all. Trust me, Dylan!”
Her face was so earnest that, if not for the glaring bump on her forehead, Dylan might have actually believed her ridiculous claim.
He said, “You little fool. You’re talking nonsense and smiling like an idiot.”
Listening to Eliza’s words of concern, the frustration and irritation that had been simmering in Dylan’s heart melted away completely.
He wiped the comers of his slightly reddened eyes and scooped her up from the ground.
He said, “Alright, didn’t you say you wanted to see the stars? Lead the way, little guide! You know I am hopeless with directions”
