The Lady Nun Seeks Justice (Eliza Stonor) novel Chapter 290

290.Chapter 290

“Crack!”

As Benedict stepped into the study, the sound of a coffee cup being violently shattered caught his attention. He quickly entered the room and saw Dylan, who had promised to stay in his quarters earlier, now kneeling before Gabriel.

Coffee had splashed everywhere near his knees, and the shattered fragments indicated several coffee cups had already been broken before Benedict arrived.

Sitting at the high table, Gabriel narrowed his eyes, his voice tinged with anger. “Dylan, I’m giving you one last chance. Tell me, what were you looking for in this study?”

Dylan kept his head down, silent. From the moment he had been captured, he hadn’t uttered a single word. Despite Gabriel s repeated questioning, Dylan remained expressionless, offering no response at all.

The sight only fueled Gabriel’s rage. “Fine. If you’re going to resort to such underhanded tactics, don’t blame me for what

comes next.”

“Someone, bring the family punishment!”

At the door, Benedict couldn’t hold himself back any longer. He stepped forward, his voice urgent, “Wait, Gabriel. There must be some misunderstanding here. Let me speak with Dylan. Perhaps we can get to the bottom of this.”

Gabriel looked up at Benedict, frustration simmering beneath his cold expression. Why, among his four sons, was there not one who could give him peace of mind?

Gabriel thought, ‘Why is it that none of my four sons are giving me peace of mind? Matthew and Anthony are excusable- one is too extreme in his actions, and the other is constantly in poor health. Even Dylan isn’t much better–impulsive, quick to anger, and difficult to handle. But Benedict is different. He’s the one who resembles me the most out of all of them.‘

Gabriel had always taken great care in raising Benedict, teaching him since childhood. He had already decided long ago that Benedict would inherit the title of Duke once he stepped down. It had always been the plan.

But somewhere along the way, everything in the Duke’s estate had unraveled. Matthew, Anthony, and Sophie were a different matter. But Dylan had run away with Eliza, and Benedict had grown distant, estranged from him. They only spoke when necessary, avoiding him the rest of the time.

If it weren’t for Dylan today, Gabriel doubted Benedict would even have stepped foot in his study.

Gabriel fixed Benedict with a stern look. But in the end, Gabriel relented, speaking with a cool detachment.

“If you want to speak to him, then do it. Clear up whatever misunderstanding there is. Otherwise, I won’t show him any more mercy today.”

Gabriel spoke coldly, “The Duke’s estate can do without Lord Dylan, but we will not tolerate the presence of such deceitful, dishonorable individuals.”

Dylan, hearing Gabriel’s harsh words, clenched his fists tightly. After remaining silent for so long, he finally couldn’t hold

back.

“Gabriel, why such anger? Could it be you’re hiding something in your study that shouldn’t be seen?” Dylan shot back.

“Silence!” Gabriel snapped, his voice sharp.

Before Gabriel could say more, Benedict quickly reacted, slapping Dylan lightly on the back of his head.

“Gabriel, Dylan speaks without thinking. Please allow me to handle this and discipline him properly,” Benedict said, his tone respectful yet firm. “Please, give me a moment.”

Dylan opened his mouth, about to protest, but Benedict immediately yanked him by the ear, causing him to wince in pain. ” Do you understand? Are you going to listen to me?”

Benedict nodded, his eyes flashing as he glared at Dylan. His words were sharp, tinged with barely contained anger, ” made you wait long enough, but yes, I’ve learned something.”

Gabriel motioned for him to continue, “Speak.”

Benedict then asked, “Gabriel, did you transfer the properties of Dylan and Matthew’s estates earlier?”

Gabriel paused, his brow furrowing. “Yes, I transferred them. They are now under Eliza’s name. How else could both Dylan and Matthew still be here in the estate?”

Before Gabriel could finish speaking, Dylan’s anger flared, his face twisting with rage. “How could you take it upon yourself to transfer my estate?”

Seeing the fire in Dylan’s eyes, Gabriel’s gaze sharpened as he narrowed his eyes. “What, did you come to my study just to search for the deed for your estate?”

Dylan’s voice was filled with fury. “Yes! I came for my estate! When I left the house, Benedict had told me that I wasn’t allowed to take anything from the Duke’s estate. But that estate isn’t even part of the Duke’s holdings–it’s mine! How could you dispose of it like that?”

His words were unambiguous, the anger in his eyes unapologetically raw–it was the pure, unfiltered anger he harbored for Gabriel. To anyone else, it might have seemed like he was defending his estate, but Benedict knew better.

“Gabriel, here’s the situation,” Benedict said, his voice steady. “Dylan still believed that the deeds to his estate were in your possession, so he planned to take them with him before leaving.”

Benedict thought, ‘This is the first time I’ve ever lied to Gabriel like this, and I can feel the tension in my hands beneath my sleeves. Gabriel is far too sharp. Can I fool him and Dylan like this? I can’t help but worry. But it seems Gabriel isn’t as easily convinced as I hoped.’

Gabriel narrowed his eyes, a calculating look creeping into his gaze. “You thought your estate was still in my possession?* he asked, his voice cold. “I recall that when you and Matthew were captured and held by Eliza, you should have known the terms she set. So why are you still under the impression it remains here?”
